In most cases "ob" means "whether" and is used for indirect yes or no questions. Try adding "or not" in English: if it fits, use "ob".

No, it does actually mean "if" in the fixed phrase "as if" which is "als ob" in German
·Du siehst aus als ob du etwas Schlaf gebrauchen könntest.

A few. "Ob" can stand alone in short answers or thoughts like wondering something. In formal written German it can also mean "due to" and needs the genitive. If you're unsure about genitive, use "wegen" instead.
·Ob er mich liebt?
·I wonder whether he loves me.
·Ob des starken Regens wurde das Fußballspiel abgesagt.
·Due to strong rain the soccer match was canceled.
"Und ob." is a short, casual expression meaning something like "of course" or "you bet" and its tone can vary a lot depending on context.
·Kann ich zu deiner Geburtstagsparty kommen?
·Und ob!
·Can I come to your birthday party?

I will say, at least in the dialect of American English I speak, you absolutely can say “If […] or not” instead of whether. Understandable regardless!
Would it be accepted in writing though? Like in a school paper?
It sounds less posh or formal, but unless your teacher were a “I’m sure you *can*, but you *may* not” type of presciptivist stickler, then I don’t see it being marked wrong.
edit: This is more subjective maybe, but I feel like especially after “regardless” if is equally correct as whether, even in writing. I’m sure in college papers I used “Regardless of if X or not, […]” and never got corrected.

Definitiv “ob”. “dass” ist “that” und klingt ungefährt genau so wie auf Englisch.

Vielleicht ist es auf Englisch sogar “okay-er” als auf Deutsch.
Ansonsten “ob” denn es geht im Kern um “whether or not”.
Re “damit” vs “so dass”… da würde ich “damit” nehmen. “so dass” klingt irgendwie zu “corporate” hier.
Danke – Ich fand deinen “Three words to sound more German” Artikel sehr hilfreich. Tatsächlich war Finden eines der Wörter. Ich benutze nun das fast immer. Um klar zu sein, du sagst dass es vielleicht OK ist wenn ich …dass ich genug Geld habe” benutzen aber es ist definitiv besser dass ich …ob ich Geld habe” verwenden.
Ja genau. Du hörst vielleicht von irgend’nem Muttersprachler mal “Bin nicht sicher, dass ich genug Geld habe.” aber das funktioniert dann wirklich nur da, und wenn du es zu “ich weiß nicht, … ” änderst, dann macht “dass” keinen Sinn mehr.

In diesem Satz kann ich nicht verstanden warum man “ändern wird sich nichts” sagt, statt “wird sich nichts ändern“.

I think the inherent structure of the sentence would be better captured by a “-” instead of a comma.
– Ob du dagegen ….. passiv bleibst – ändern wird sich nichts.
The first part is an unfinished sentence, then comes a pause and then comes a full sentence as conclusion, but they’re not really connected in a grammatical sense.
To “complete” the ob-part, you could slap an “egal, ob” in front of it. Which is basically short for “Es ist egal, ob… .”
Then, the ändern-sentence would just be a new sentence.
In order to affect the word order in the ändern-sentence, the “ob”-sentence would need to be an element of it. But it isn’t. There is no question word you can use to ask for it from the context of the “ändern-sentence”.
It’s the same in English.
– Whether you’re protesting or remain passiv – nothing will change.
You cannot ask for the whether-part from with the change-part without adding a whole new verb.

This is a nice example for German using position 1 for effect.
Both are correct. The first one is the default. The second one moves the final verb slot into the position one. Yes, that is totally possible. And that makes it so “nichts” is at the end, which makes it the punchline of the sentence.

Does the construction in the example of “Ob er mich liebt” always demand that the conjugated verb be placed in the final position? I read the following sentence in a book, and it tripped me up.
“Ob es ihr wieder seine Geschichten ins Ohr flüstert?”
After reading this article I took it to mean something akin to “I wonder if/will it whisper its story in her ear again?” I assume my sentence and “Ob er mich liebt” are following the same type of construction.
Yes, it’s the same construction and yes, the verb will typically be at the end, because the “ob-sentence” is a side sentence (subordinate clause).

What’s the difference between using “Ob” and using “Weil” to give a reason why something is happening? Is Ob more formal whereas Weil is used in speech?
I’m not sure I understand the question. “ob” and “weil” do not overlap at all.
Could you give me an example and a bit more insight into what it is that you have in mind?

Couldn’t you also use Weil to write something like “Because it was raining, the football match was canceled” like “Weil es regen wurde das Fußballspiel abgesagt”
Yes, that works of course, but it’s a different sentence. “regnen” is a verb now, in the original it was a noun. So you can’t just pop in “weil” for “ob”, that won’t work. But you can use them both to build sentences that express the same idea :).

“wegen” verlangt den Genitiv! immer
es heißt folglich “wegen des Regens wurde…”. Jemand der den Dativ nach “wegen” verwendet outet sich leider etwas ;)
es lässt sich auch einfach merken .. “wegen des” endet auf s (des) .. also muss auch danach das Wort auf s enden, was im Genitiv wohl öfter der Fall ist. (öfter gibts übrigens niemals mit s am Ende .. also öfters ist genauso falsch). beide falschen Versionen findet mal leider häufig der gesprochenen Spache. Leider auch im deutschen Nachrichten TV.

Was mit der Verwendung des Wortes ob im Bereich Toponomastik? Wie z.B. im Fall des Stadtnamens Rothenburg ob der Tauber, wo der Begriff etwas wie “auf der Tauber” bezeichnet. Einfach eine Eigenheit des Mittelhochdeutschen?
Das Wort auf gab es schon im Mittelalter; wie denn unterschieden sich im Mittelalter ob und auf?.
Das kann ich dir nicht beantworten, dazu weiß ich zu wenig. Aber “ob der Tauber” ist ziemlich sicher eine Variante von “auf”. So wie Englisch “up”. Ich glaube (und das ist wirklich nur ein Gefühl), dass es keinen Unterschied in der Bedeutung gab.

Your statement was spot on, but I’m not sure if that’s the connection to “obwohl”.
Think of the English “Even if… , I still…”
That’s a similar “relation” of the parts as for obwohl and you have an “if” there as well.

Wait, did I say that?? That’s a mistake then. You can absolutely NOT replace “als ob” with “wenn”… you might hear “wie wenn” but that’s probably regional and colloquial.

Why is gebrauchen in the strong past tense here? The need is in the present, no? I know it is with konnen so I would have otherwise assumed that this required the infinitive brauchen?
That’s an easy one to clear up.
“gebrauchen” looks like a past, but it is an infinitive. By itself, “gebrauchen” means “to use” (yes, yet another version for it), and in combination with “können” it’s something like “to have a need for”.
