I’m just wondering about all the possible ways you can use only and just.

Could you say Ich habe lediglich das book angefangen? I have only begun the book

or er hat lediglich 10 Euro in seinem Portmonaie He only had 10 euros in his wallet

Er war lediglich vor 2 Minuten da

He was just here two minutes agp.

Great question!

I’d say no. I feel like “lediglich” is like “not a big deal”, but in a very formal way.

If you use it in your example, that sounds like you’re answering to a book store clerk who is asking you what the hell you’re doing in the chair in the reading corner.

For 10 Euro it would work, but it sound weird. Like… there needs to be a reason why you would pick this over “nur”.

The third example does not work at all and neither would “nur”. If you want to have the words target the time, you need to put them AFTER “vor” (“vor nur 2 Minuten). Otherwise you’re targeting “da sein” and not the short time.

  • Er war nur vor 2 Minuten da.
  • Two minutes ago was the only time he was here.
