This is a fun one!
Or
1)
“… Einhorn, das…” And “als” is better than “während” because it’s a fairly momentary action.
2) nice use of “zwar”.
3)
“vor-zwei-Tagen-angefangenden”… nope!
That sounds like “someone” started him there. Like if you say “the started barista”
Technically, “angefangen habenden” would work, but no one talks that way EVER.
Check out my article on participle constructions if you want to learn more about that :)
1. Damnit… Well at least i got the case right ^^
2. Thanks ;)
3. Ach yeah that thought did cross my mind as to whether it would sound like it was something being done to him. But then I remembered something about a grass-eating deer and thought I’d just give it a try – worst that can happen is getting it wrong and being corrected, which is actually a pretty good outcome!
Truthfully though one reason I shortened it so much is because I couldn’t figure out if I should emphasise the barista’s mistake or Thomas being a diva. I wasn’t sure how I would construct it even in English ^^
How’s this version:
Is it clear who the pronouns refer to in each case?
Hi Emanuel
This is a really great Post. And I should say I really enjoyed reading the comments. Here are my sentences:
Thanks!
1)
Yes, that sounds better how you did it!!
2)
“aufgrund” sounds super formal in this context.
3)
Grammatically fine, but the order of the two people is weird in that the pronouns are not very clear. “wo er ein Stammgast ist” is naturally perceived to be about the Barista because it’s integrated into the barista sentence. You have to jump up two levels to get to Thomas, mentally.
Viel Spass!
1) Perfect!
2) Perfect!
3) You messed up the word order in both relative sentences ;)
omg i did indeed
You missed the subject in the “Wald”-part and in number 3, the verb has to come after the “als” sentence. Other than that, very well done!!
Yes, but it sounds a bit official/scripted.
In daily life, “der” with a stress is “pointy” enough.
I don’t think I use “dieser” as a pronoun at all.
1)
Grammatically correct, but you’re connecting the last part as a main sentence and that sounds a bit “Not elegant”. It’s like how an excited child would narrate it.
2)
“ich” is missing in the project part. And you should put a full stop before “trotzdem”, because structurally you’re saying two sentences. And “trotzdem” is position one, so the verb has to come after. It does NOT make the verb go to the end.
3)
You forgot the subject in the last part. Same glitch as in number 2, actually :)
Vielen dank!
This was a great exercise. I’m still at a fairly basic level, but I’m picking up bits and pieces in many places. The feedback is greatly appreciated.
That’s great! Your brain will take what it’s ready for and ignore the rest. It knows best :)

Quick tangential question: in part 3 of the third example, why does “hat” appear twice? The “hat” at the end is surprising to me.
Wow, the second one should absolutely not be there :).
My bad, I must have rephrased it and forgot to fully edit!!
Interesting that no one has mentioned it so far. I hope not too many were confused by this :D
Emanuel, did i once spot an older article around long sentence structure please? It would have been called something like “building long sentences” I was looking for it in the “Grammar Course” but couldn’t see it anyway. Did i imagine this?
I totally forgot about that one:
https://yourdailygerman.com/build-german-sentences-exercise/
I totally need to add that to the grammar archive! Thanks for the reminder!
great thanks!
Brilliant idea, really enjoyed this. (Didn’t write – you have enough answers!)
Appreciated :)!!

1)
“als” instead of “wenn”
2)
“trotzdem” does not work that way. You need obwohl.
Position of “muss” is wrong.
3)
It’s okay, but the two sentences that end with “hat” at the end are not very good style generally.
I think you directly translated “it was because” here. That doesn’t work in German :)
Eigentlich, that doesn’t work in English either!!!
Camille
“trotzdem” doesn’t work that way. You need obwohl for this kind of structure.
Also, “eingucken”… I think you mixed up the order there :)
My probably messy attempts:
Actually, they were pretty much perfect, except “wenn” in the first one. That should be “als”.
Thanks for the feedback! Happy I overestimated my rustiness.
It’s understandable, but there are quite a few problems here grammatically. Take a look at the other solutions in the comments and let me know if you have questions.
(please, I learned spaziergang machen order spazierengehen, and I am not sure about ‘machen’ in this sentence. It is assumed one is ‘making/taking” a walk/hike with ‘spazieren” without gehen oder machen?
I wanted to add ‘machine at the end, but then it seemed weird. Thanks.
typo! sorry. Not ‘machine”.
Sounds like “Auto correct” got busy :)
LOL…indeed
“beim Spazieren” is totally fine.
If you want to use “machen”, you’d need Spaziergang with it.
thanks
1)
“… Einhorn, das sie gesehen hat…” (it’s das Einhorn, not der)
“als sie im Wald …” It’s in the past, so you need “als” here :)
2)
Nice idea to use “wobei”. Well done!! “obwohl” would be better though, because the contradiction sounds bigger then.
3)
Almost perfect!! You misplaced the verb in the “Becher” part. It starts with “dass”, so that should give you a hint :)
Danke schön! I habe sehr viel gelernt!
