“No more beta“
Hello everyone,
first of, big apology to all Australian readers for forgetting your continent yesterday in the poll!!! For shame, Emanuel!
And second of all, welcome to epic German Advent Calendar day 5 and behind today’s door is a nice little
Site Update
Or actually, I should say Site Upgrade, because it’s quite amazing.
About a year ago, in the calendar, I told you about the new dictionary function we’re working on.
The idea is to have a glossary for ALL the words and phrases that are discussed somewhere in the article. For each entry, you get
- translations
- some usage notes
- important grammar bits
- related words
- a link to the article in which we talk about it (or mention it)
And to top it all off, eventually there will be also the audio and example sentences with audio.
It’s been up for a few months as “glossary (beta)“ in the menu, but that was really just a beta. Slow, not in shape, messy and bad with women.
But we’ve not stopped working on it and now we have what I would call a first alpha version.
So what’s new?
Well first of, my army of unpaid interns and I have added more and more of the vocabulary that is on the site. It’s still not complete and also the entries need refinement but it’s about 5000 entries already, which is quite amazing.
But the REAL upgrade is the software. Daniel, the head developer (and his team of unpaid interns, I assume… at least that’s how I would do it).. he has given the software a major update.
For one thing, it loads MUCH faster now and it’s actually “fun” to go there because you don’t have to be scared to get stuck for 10 seconds.
But more importantly, he has realized his vision of having separate pages for each entry.
The list of search results gives you the results and their translation and if you click, you’ll get all the other stuff (examples, article, relatives).
And that is awesome because it makes the dictionary load much faster and you can bookmark single entries and share them as links.
And most importantly… we can now COMMENT on single entries.
That is absolutely terrific, because you can ask questions about that specific entry, be it about grammar or usage or the difference to something and we can clear it all up there. And you can tell me about mistakes in the entry (of which there are many) and I can fix it.
So yeah… I am really really really really happy with this new version and I can’t wait for when we’re finally done with the examples :).
I’ll add the new link to the menu of course, but you can also find it here:
Yourdailygerman – Dictionary – Version 2.0
And here’s an example for a single entry:
“aufnehmen” – in the new dictionary
Let me know in the comments how you like it and also if you’ve actually used the old beta version.
Have a great day and see you tomorrow.

It’s been almost 4 years since the update/upgrade of the dictionary, and I was SUPER DUPER HYPER EXCITED when I first DISCOVERED IT a few days ago. Thank you Daniel (and your team of hopefully-paid interns), and thank you Emanuel (and your team as well) for the effort behind this dictionary. My new hobby now is watching a German dubbed animation movie without subtitles, and when I hear a new word I type it here in the dictionary to get to know all about it. I usually type it wrong though, so the “did you mean” feature is really cool and helpful. Great work, guys!
I’m really happy someone is going through the Advent Calendar series :).
There’s a lot of gold there to be found.
As for the dictionary.. there was no team. It was just Daniel and me in the beginning and now I had help from Vitor from Brasil (both Daniel and Vitor were paid :), but I did all the entries myself, and I also did some of the coding.
The “did you mean” thing is actually a really simple thing that works so well, we decided to keep it :).
Do you know that I have a dictionary browser extension for chrome?
I did NOT know that.. THAT’S REALLY NICE EMANUEL :)
How do we get that?
OH MY GOD THAT’S A LOT OF WORK FOR ONLY 3 PEOPLE
Thank you Vitor!
I’m glad you decided to keep it it’s really amazing, turns my giberish German spelling into the actual word I was looking for, magic!
You can find it here:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/yourdailygerman-dictionar/apopfphdghpnhadkobgkpnioncmcjoki
Please leave a review if you use it. I need some :)
I also have a grammar analyzer based on ChatGPT:
https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/ai-grammar-analyzer-by-yo/dbekogoohigpdgepedgkbhekpmknhdfd
I’ll definitely check out the grammar analyzer. I need one installed in my brain at the moment, but a chrome extension would do just fine :)
I downloaded the dixtionary extension. When I type in a word it loads for a second but doesn’t give out any results whatsoever. I noticed you wrote there was an error if the word isn’t in the dictionary, so I tried writing the magic word (which is “Einhorn” of course) but it was also nothing.I refreshed the page, restarted the browser and still nothing. Any idea why would that be?
Oh, it’s working again now :). Thanks for letting me know, otherwise I wouldn’t have noticed for a while!
Bitte:)
I experimentally tried it and it looks wunderbar.. Can’t wait to get stuck at the meaning of a German word and try it in real time.
Wunderbar…..could you also add a “search” feature?
Uhm… what do you mean? It does have a search feature…
Fantastic, and really is fast, which is great, because I deleted the Beta version after a few trieds, due to its slowness. Thanks to everyone who contributed to it.
I’m really glad it’s at usable speed now, believe me :)
I like the dictionary, but was wondering how and if, you handled irregular verbs. So I did a search on haben. Never got a hit on haben back, although there were many hits. So I tried essen, same problem.
I also wanted to know if the dictionary showed the der noun declensions , tried a search on Schluss, but the his did not list Schluss.
These are the two aspects f other dictionaries that I use a lot , it would be nice if this one handled both (and found the search term of course).
So far, I have only entered those that I discuss somewhere on the site. And some are missing, because we’re not done entering all the data (it’s a LOT).
I never talked about essen specifically. Yes, it’s part of many examples, and it’s an important word, but it’s never part of a “topic”.
I think I will try to add conjugation somehow, and I do give the plural. But the main purpose is to make the archive more accessible. I cannot compete with actual dictionaries.
It’s not part of the dictionary, but there was an article about irregular verbs a while back that you might find helpful. It has a spreadsheet with some of the common patterns.
Other than that, you can find some of the main conjugation patterns in some of the older articles (go under Vocabulary > By Date). Like with the one on liegen, you can pick up the 3 main forms you need, liegen, lag, gelegen.
For full conjugation tables, you can go to sites like verbformen.com. You can also use Google to search here for specific words, just add “site:yourdailygerman.com” to the search.
Awesome job! Thank you for all your hardwork :). This is the BEST German learning site!
Danke :) :) :)
Tolle Arbeit! Der Link im Header zum Wörterbuch ist allerdings noch mit “Beta” bezeichnet ;).
Ist auch noch die alte Version. Die neue bleibt für ein paar Tage im Kalender :)
Prima!
Really GOOD Dictionary, you can learn, and even you can go next part by a”click” to remind other articles and so on… Very good service Emmanuel and all persons in “team”.. SHER TOLL DANKE…
Danke dir :)!
An FYI…in software/web development, alpha comes before beta. So, if I understand you correctly, you’re actually now at release version 1 (V1). Congrats!!! and thanks for this wonderful resource.
Hahaha, I didn’t know that. “B-Ware” in german means second grade products, and A-Ware is the best. I thought this applies to software also :)
Looks like the interns haven’t gotten much sleep this year :)
Seriously though, this loads so much faster on my phone compared to the old version. I really like the different categories you can click on, like “auf verbs” and “phrases.” And the blue green explanations on the right side are the cherry on top. My only complaint is it’s kind of a rabbit hole, what with all this effortless scrolling and clicking. I was just going to peek at today’s surprise and go make breakfast….
“it’s kind of a rabbit hole, what with all this effortless scrolling and clicking”
That is such an amazing compliment :D!!
Danke!!!
I did use it for the first time yesterday. I just went to look at the new one. That is super! You must be thrilled to have this resource. This is going to make it so easy to check words out. Previously I had to search for a while to find things. Great job!
Ausgezeichnet Emanuel
Per your request, I am letting you know that I did use the Beta version. As a beginner, beginner, beginner… I use everything in your website. Thank you for all the advancements to it. Much appreciated. I
this is great! Vielen Dank! ☺️
This is great! Prima! And excellent job to the team!
Danke, and I’ll pass on the compliment :)
Konjugation
Super , ich fraue mich auf dieser Verbesserung deiner Site . Doch es würde noch helfreich wenn Man könnte die Kombination jeden Verben in verschiedenen grammatikalischen Zeiten sehen.
Bis Morgen
Eine Nachfrage dazu… wieviel braucht man da? Ist es wirklich nötig/hilfreich zum Beispiel Konditional 2 stehen zu haben.. so wie:
Ich würde gehen
du würdest gehen
…
Das ist doch immer dasselbe in Deutsch. Welche Formen sind denn essentiell?
I look for, from time to time, the conjugation of certain verbs in ” conjugation.com or in Pons.de ” .
I need especially for present tense ( 2nd and third person ) ,past tense and past participle .
For other case , one can find them intuitively. Anyway it depends of any user’s need.
Till tomorrow morning
Oh yeah, you’re right. At least the forms for “du” in present” should be there also, since it might be irregular.
Awesome. I like it so much..so simple yet informativ. Looking forward to its final outcome haven’t checked the old beta coz of the early warning
Wow! Prima!
Congratulations!!!Exciting news! It definitely loads much faster. I can get a feel of the vision (linking different parts etc), look forward to it!
One question/ request – would it be possible to add the conjugated verb and in different tenses somewhere? It may get too big, so understand if it’s not possible. But thought I’d ask :)
Thank you!
IT’s possible, but I might have to pull it from external sources. I can’t enter all those forms by hand. Also… which ones would you think are really needed? Like… do you need “würde gehen” for all persons?
I personally think, it would be too much work, and there is a great resource for that at
https://dict.leo.org/englisch-deutsch/
When you click on a verb there, you get all possible conjugations. I would prefer that Emanuel concentrates on other things.
I found this platform “Verbix”. They offer an API to integrate their verb conjugator into your site/application.
I emailed them, so if that works out, I can easily integrate that. But yeah… entering all that myself would take too much time.
