It’s Easter for many of you and one of the traditions, at least in Germany, is everyone’s favorite furry cometh and bringeth.
Yes, I mean the Easter Bunny.
So the Easter bunny brings some treats and hides them around the house or the yard.
Or the website, apparently, because when I logged to reply to your comments in today, I actually caught the bunny in the act.
I was like “What are you doing here?”
And it was like “I’m bringing a Easter surprise… but… *sobs”
And I was like “And then why are you crying, little hare?”
And the bunny said “YourDailyGerman is so messy. If I hide something here, no one will ever find it..”
So I suggested that the Easter bunny just give the surprise to me and I’ll pass it on to you :)
And the Easter surprise is … drumroll…
The YourDailyGerman Anki Deck by Frequency
Hooray.
Seriously though… the deck actually comes from one of you readers and it’s really cool :)
A few weeks ago, Debora Ramacciotti reached out to me. She’s doing a PhD in Quantum Computing in Hannover at the moment and she also does cyber security but the real challenge is of course… learning German.
To help with that, she has created an Anki deck based on my dictionary here.
That’s a 12.000+ strong deck, but Debora actually ordered the words based on word frequency and to some extend level, I guess. So but there is some structure to learning with it, which is great.
What’s important is that does contain the usage and meaning notes I have added to many of the words, so you have some context to the translations you see.
And what’s also cool is that each card links back to the entry in my dictionary, so if you need more details on a word or more examples or if you want to ask me a question, it’s literally just one click away
And today, I’m sharing the deck with you as a little Easter surprise.

My Plans with Anki
Very soon, you’ll be able to download the vocabulary you saved as an Anki deck with epicly useful flashcards.Including your own notes and examples, so you can add your own notes right here and then have them show up on Anki too.
And you’ll also be able to download Anki decks for each of the vocabulary focused lessons.
So for instance, you’ll be able to download a deck for all the words around “greifen” and you’ll also be able to flip through it here and add notes and all that.
The main point of these lessons is to explore vocabulary in context and with the logic behind it, and intertwining that with a proper way to practice the words is what was missing for a “complete” experience. Well… that’ll come now, so stay tuned :)
But Deboras deck is also great because it’s complete AND ordered in a sensible way, so shout-out to her again for making it and sharing it!

Hi, I managed to install Anki itself (after so many updating errors, blocking my installation), i succeeded in importing your file also. I faced like 13 Thousands random words (consisting pronouns and adverbs as well) and it felt like too messy. Is there some way to depart them or if there’s some kinda Category to them? I closed the whole thing and opened it again hoping for some orientation but faced the first word as first thing to learn. everyday 20 words, out of 13K words, considering some of them needs to be repeated, it takes about 3 years :D but the main Problem is the category thing. (if there was some Häufigkeit or Niveau of the words as Category, that’d be great!)

I’ve not used Anki; I do have loads of flashcards from Easy German/Seedlang. Can you explain the differences between the two, and particularly how your planned Anki plans would differ. I’m always up for a new approach in language learning , but not so much for creating duplicate flashcards! Thanks so much.
Anki is just a “system” that you can use. Like Quizlet or Memrise or any other app, except Anki is (mostly) free and open source.
I guess you are doing the Seedlang and Easy German cards within Seedlang and Easy German, right? Or do you have a separate app that you import them too?
The reason I’m going with Anki is that in a recent poll I ran here, it was by far the most used system.
But I’m also planning to build out a trainer “on page”, so you can just do flashcards right here.
If you have a good stack on Seedlang already, it makes sense to stick with that. It’s not worth it to run two different apps for the same thing :).

That worked amazingly, on AnkiWeb and AnkiDroid. The download just opened in Anki when I clicked on it and everything loaded fine. I “Buried” the *most* frequent cards (because I already know them) and now the deck is good to go. Thanks so much for this! I absolutely love the idea of more decks for the vocabulary focused lessons!
For those struggling to make sense of the download: first install Ankidroid (on Android) or “Anki” if you’re using an iPhone. Then when you click the download button you should be asked what you’d like to do with the resulting file: just choose the app you have downloaded and it should add a lovely new deck for you to study from.
In short: it’s a bit more straightforward if you install the app first!

I Downloaded an .apkg file to my desktop, but it wants an app to open it. I’m stopped there. What’s next?
You need Anki to use it. You can either install it or use AnkiWeb, but the cards don’t work by themselves.

I had to download an app, Ankidroid and import the card file which I downloaded, into it, before I could open the file on my phone.

but have no idea what to do next!
You can sync them in your account! Everything is easier if you use the free desktop app to manage the deck, and then use the mobile app to review the cards every day
You have to import the deck into the app. Then, it gets added to your account and you can start studying with it.

I don’t know much about Anki. It seems I need to download these flashcards first to my computer- but can these flashcards transfer to iPhone? Is there an app?
I want to learn high frequency words to aid basic speech. I have learned many things from my native German tutor but speech is a different process in my brain and I struggle getting beyond KinderDeutsch.
There is a free desktop app of anki in which you can import them, otherwise the mobile app has to be paid (only once). You can also use the website which is free.
Anki has to be paid on mobile?! I wasn’t aware of that because I only have it on Desktop.
I think that’s only true for iPhones. Anki Droid is free.
That’s such a weird choice. Unfair to all the apple users out there.
Toughest nut to crack in learning any new language (obviously excluding one’s mother tongue) is learning to interact naturally in context with target language native speakers.
Watching TV dialogues w/German captions is an excellent way of improving both listening and speaking skills!
So there is Anki for Desktop, there’s AnkiWeb which you can use in the browser and there’s an Android and iPhone app. I think you can sync all of them, but you could also just work with one. You need to pick one option and import the deck there.

Schon. Aufs Land gefahren sind meine Frau und ich bei uns in der Gegend und da wurden die Ostereier hingestreut, die wir einsammeln und dann zurueckbringen mussten.
Danach sind wir ruhig nach Hause gefahren.
