I was hearing this music which is a translation of a english one to german, and there was this verse:
‘Halt die Monster in Schach’

From context it seems to be to hold them back, like, far away or something

Nice one!

“in Schach halten” means keeping someone in check or under control. Like, think of a magician controlling the unicorns with fireball spells so they can’t advance.
Maybe “keeping in check” is actually the exact same phrase, considering you also say “check” in “chess”.
It’s a fairly common idiom in German.

How would you say:
if one of you gets bored of playing I would gladly play

Wenn die Partie einem von euch langweilig wird würde ich gern den anderen mitspielen

?
Does that sound friendly and positive?

Sounds super stilted.

I would say:

– Wenn einer von euch keine Lust mehr hat, würde ich gerne weiterspielen.

Or if you insist on “boring”:

– Wenn einem von euch langweilig wird, …

It’s a bit tricky if they’re mixed genders… one male, one female. The “einer” then sounds off, so I’d probably say “jemand” or “du oder du” or “ihr” or whatever.

Sidenote: “mitspielen” takes the preposition “mit”.

– Ich spiele mit dir mit.

But that does NOT work for the opponent in a game.

Cool, yes kein Lust mehr is better than langweilig. Thanks !
