My favorite source for the origin of English words.
Duden says the difference is the size and that a Bücherei is public. Apparently a Bücherei is small.
But what size is small?
Is the library at Hallesches Tor small enough to be a Bücherei?
Is the Staatsbibliotek on Potsdamerstraße too big to be a Bücherei?
Do you agree with Duden?
What word would you use more ?
I do not agree with Duden here at all.
Doesn’t mean that I am right, but a Stadtbücherei can be big and a Bibliothek can be small… in fact, Bibliothek can be the “book room” in a large house if it has enough books stacked.
Would be intesting to ask this on Reddit or German.stackexchange to see what native speakers have to say.
