I think this question has slipped by your all-seeing eye. I hope you see it – I definitely would like to know what is the #1 word for this.

For what it is worth Duolingo teaches “Geldbeutel” when this noun finally arrives in the lessons. I say ‘finally’ because I had to learn Schildkröte and Schneke in week two…sigh. So what is the name of the thing I am going to put in my back pocket today?

The only word I use is “das Portemonnaie”… might be a Berlin thing, though. Brieftasche sounds like “a lot of documents and cards” and I just can’t imagine a normal person using that in daily conversation.
But yeah… my perception might be regionally colored.

You are saying Brieftasche is formal, and Geldbörse is formal AND boring. :) So what word is the right word for the folding object in my back pocket that has my ID, cash and some credit cards? Is there something in Germany that has ONLY cash but zero credit cards, and driver’s license?

Schatz, hast du mein_ _______ gesehen?
Klar schmoopy*, dein_ _______ ist auf dem Tisch.
