Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of the hot new season of the year: German Prefix Verbs Explained. Netflix doesn’t have it. AppleTV+ doesn’t have it. And Disney+ doesn’t have it. But we have it here and today, we’ll take a look at the meaning of auskommen ▶ Auskommen is a combination of the German word for to come and the German word for out. So naturally, it means to come out and all we need to do is look at a couple of examples and boom, new word acquired. Right? Well, no. Of course not. Auskommen does NOT mean to come out. That’s what the so called r-version rauskommen is for, as we’ll see later. But first, let’s explore auskommen itself. The Meaning (and Use) of “auskommen” Aus can add two notions to a verb: switched-off-ness, and outside-ness. In case of auskommen we’re dealing with the latter, but in a really, really twisted way. Back a few centuries ago when tomatoes were still tasty, eggs were a cent and meanings still made sense, people still used auskommen as to come out, in context of actual buildings but also in a more abstract sense of coming out of a journey…

Hi Emanuel – is herausstellen a synonym for rauskommen? So in your example could one say Beim Meeting stellte sich heraus….,
Thanks!!
Great question.
They do share the idea of “new information appearing” but “rauskommen” is more about secrets or things that were hidden.
“sich herausstellen” is not about revealing secrets but about stumbling across a fact you weren’t aware of.
Like… imagine at a meeting you find out you all have the exact same birthday.
“sich herausstellen” would fit for that, while “rauskommen” would sound a bit off. Like someone was trying to cover that up.
Hope that helps!
Hallo Emanuel
Wenn jemand sagt:
Was versteht man darunter:
1- 30 Euro ist viel/genug Geld, deshalb wird das reichen.
oder:
2- 30 Euro ist nicht genung, aber ich bin ein sparsamer Mensch.
Danke!
Hmm, was heißt denn dein zweiter Satz? Es ist genug oder es ist nicht genug?
Ich meine normalerweise würde das nicht reichen aber ich versuche irgendwie diesen Betrag einzuteilen oder ökonomisch umzugehen, damit ich nicht auf dem Trockenen sitze.
Das ist dann offen. “auskommen mit” hat da keinen Beitrag, es sagt einfach “I can make do with 30 bucks.”
This makes so much more sense to me as a beginner to German right now. Love your articles!
Danke dir :)!
OMGOD I am in LOVE with these lessons THANK YOU so much
Glad to hear that :)
Re: the last example, is it possible to rephrase it like this?
Das Ergebnis des Tests handelt sich darum, dass ich nicht laktoseintollerant bin.
(Sorry it’s not related to this article, I’m trying to tie in grammar I’ve been struggling with lately)
“sich handeln um” is not straight up a replacement for “to be”.
It is about the idea of getting the “content” to a “headline”. For example:
– The “Dogecoin” is a cryptocurrency that….
The headline is “dogecoin” and then comes the explanation. The German could be then
– Bei Dogecoin handelt es sich um….
Your example doesn’t fit that setup. The headline is “result of the test”, but what then follows is NOT an explanation for what “result of the test ” is.
– The result of the test is the information you can gather based on the realities you find after conducting the test.
That would be an explanation/definition, and you could use “handeln um” for that… but not for the actual result.
Also, the full phrasing is “bei X handelt es sich um…. “… The subject is pretty much always “es”, NEVER the item.
Hope that helps :)
Yes, that helps immensely! Thanks so much for the detailed explanation.
Hmm, I stumbled across sth recently that said
ich komme mit etwas klar
Means, you can do it well.
would it mean the same with aus?
“Ich komme mit etwas klar” is about being able to handle something. It’s not about doing well.
If you add “aus” instead of “klar” it’s about resources (as described in the article ;)
“Handel sth, not doing it well”
Haha,
ich komme mit etwas sehr gut aus
I fixed the problem. I am too powerful.
I mean klar, not aus in my first replay
Wife Einhorn: Dein Kopf kommt gut ohne Harre aus.
Einhorn 2 : gut nichts kommt seinem Mund. (Nothing good…)
Das Auskommen (Common alternative?)
Also, Can “auskommen mit” be used in the sense of “goes well with”
The Jacket goes well with your style?
Wife Einhorn: that sentence is fine.
Einhorn 2: That is broken. Why do you change the order for “nothing good”. And where is “aus” (needs to be a preposition here)
No, “auskommen mit” does not work for fashion and style matches.
My bad for the second one : Nichts kommt gut deinem Mund auf.
Now you put “kommt” after “nichts”. “nothing good” is one block. It needs to stay one block in German. Also “come out of your mouth” is not a prefix verb in German but just “kommt aus deinem Mund.”
It seems I need “attention to detail classes”
Thanks for the help
“It seems I need “attention to detail classes””
Absolutely :)))!!! Maybe you should write the comment in a simple text editor, then wait for 30 minutes and look at it again in quiet. Not sure, if that works but maybe you can catch some of the mistakes.
Your comments always feel really rushed to me.
Wow, started learning german for 2 months only and found your ways of explanation so FASCINATING! Thank you and LOVE it so much!!!!
Danke, das freut mich :)
What about the differences between auskommen and hinkommen when they overlap in meaning? Great content you have, btw!
The overlap is in the sense of something being enough. One difference is grammar. “Auskommen” always has to come in combination with “mit + the thing that you have enough of”
– Ich komme mit 30 Euro 3 Tage aus.
– I can get by 3 days with 30 Euro.
“hinkommen” on the other hand can be used without a direct mention of the thing.
– 30 Euro? Das müsste hinkommen.
– 30 Euro? That should do it.
For comparison:
– 30 Euro? Damit müsste ich auskommen.
Also, “auskommen” is more focused on the person being okay with the amount whereas “hinkommen” is more about the amount being enough in a general sense.
Sounds more complicated than it is, I guess :).
Let me know if that helps.
Thanks a lot! Now I get it. Just to close it.. How would one use it in the “spoken past”? You wrote down in the end of the post, but do people say:
present: Ich komme mit 30 Euro 3 Tage aus.
past ? : Letzte Woche bin ich mit 30 Euro 3 Tage ausgekommen. OR
past ? : Letzte Woche kam ich mit 30 Euro 3 Tage aus.
My point is that if it has any resemblance with the verbs like finden (fand vs gefunden), aussehen (aussah vs ausgesehen) etc..
I also suppose it applies to hinkommen too, right?
Really great question!! To me, the spoken past is actually more idiomatic, even though we’re looking at a figurative use here. So sadly, the rule of thumb I gave fails here :). Written past sounds okay, too, though.
which, by the way, reminds me of “Kein Auskommen mit dem Einkommen!”
Awesome :)
Hilfe, Emanuel!
what happened to the cartoon at the beginning of the post?
In general, I find them super-über-useful for remembering (at least some of) the meanings of the word.
Paolo
Weird… for some reason some of the links got messed up througout the site recently. It’s back now :)
wow no way! Was für ein Zufall. Ich hab magische Kräfte
Hey Emanuel. Ich habe gebeten, dass du eine Folge von Easy German guest host! Dein Blog und die Easy German Video Series haben mir sehr viel geholfen, besonders als ich Anfänger war. Ich hab auch gesagt, dass ich $20 zu jedem Projekt spenden werde, wenn du es machst. Sie filmen gewöhnlich in Berlin. Also, was denkst du denn?
Lustiger Zufall. Ich habe mich gerade heute mit Carina getroffen, weil wir bald einen Sprachkurs zusammen geben. Live.
Was ein Video angeht, mal sehen, ob da was geht.Lass dich überraschen.
Interessant… Kann man auch in nen romantischen Kontext das benutzen? ZB-:
Verlass mich nicht, Schatz! Ich kann nie ohne dich auskommen!
Oder wird das eine umgekehrte Bedeutung anzeigen? :/
Auch, warum sind ‘Schatzi & Schnucki’ nie in Deutschland benutzen? So erzählte meine Brieffreundin
– He’s crazy. (negative sense)
Ach so… “damit er sich mit mir entspannt fühlt”… besser wäre “wohl fühlt”
Und “Schnurrbärte passen ihnen am besten”… besser wäre “Schnurrbärte stehen ihnen am besten”. “passen” ist mehr über “size”, “stehen” ist über “looks”.
What about “to come out” in the sense of disclosing your sexual orientation? Does it have any German equivalent?
Actually, no. We use the English terms. The standard noun is “das Coming Out” and as far as a verb goes… I think everybody just says “sein Coming Out haben”.
A genuine German options would be
– sich zu seiner Homosexualität bekennen
but that sounds boring, stiff, formal and makes being gay sound like something you have to confess. I don’t think anyone uses this phrasing nowadays.
Very nice post. What about the “coming out of the closet” context? Also rauskommen? Not that I’ll do that…coff, coff…Err. Anyway.
Also, pleeeease, I know it is asking too much, but at some point of your life, cover the word ‘gerade’, I’ve heard it so many times in so many different contexts… Bitte und vielen dank!! Alles gute!
Yes, “rauskommen” is what you’ll do… I mean won’t do.
Little side note: if you were to use “auskommen” it would sound like you’re talking about how many clothes you own
-Ich komme mit einem Schrank aus.
Oh, and another sidenote… even though you already have “raus” at the verb, you NEED to use “aus” as a preposition for Schrank
– Ich komme aus dem Schrank raus.
The “raus” can be skipped. Then the sentences sounds more composed, less colloquial.
Oh German and it’s double prefixes. It’s just like that time you did the werden post with the double werden whammy. I actually used a werden werden the other day (talking about becoming a father on a forum) it didn’t sound as weird as I thought it was going to be.
Never tried this replying to comments directly from email thingy. Wonder if it works.

Cool
Hat geklappt :).
Ich habe mitbekommen, es ist etwas rausgekommen: Es kann vorkommen, dass die Nachkommen mit dem Einkommen nicht auskommen.
Wow!!
In English the advertisers often use “sugar free ” as a phrase
Another related noun would be die Auskunft, which is information that comes out (or is disclosed).
Great one!!!! I totally missed that! Danke :)
Yes that would be correct :-)
