I started going to a new Späti round the corner from my work, cus the usual one was geetting renovated and i found this place its still a Euro. Anyway its sort of an unusual system as you tell the guy what you want and he gets it for you. I’ll be like “ich hätte gern ein Sterni” cus i assumed it would be das cus its Bier.

But noticed he always uses the feminine e.g. “Wollnse eine”

is Sterni die?Do different Bier brands have different Artikel? or is he refering to die Flasche? does das Sterni sound wrong?

No, definitely “das Sterni” and das [AnyBeer]. There are exceptions here and there like “die Berliner Weiße”.

Is the person working there coming from a Turkish or Levante background and haven’t grown up here? They’re sometimes a bit shaky with the articles. The Späti on Boxi where I used to live was run by first generation Turkish immigrants and the older ones from the family could definitely do a mistake like that.

If the person working there is fluent and did grow up here, then maybe they are thinking of “die Molle” which is a generic term for beer. But that would be unusual.

i’m honestly not sure of his background but he is older so that could make sense.

Just realized that he could be talking about “die Flasche”.

should i then also switch to die or am ok with sticking with the idea of “ein Sterni”?

If you say “ein Sterni” you stick with that, I’d say. It’s really common to order beer by name and not common to order by bottle.
