“Break Tradition”
***
Hi ihr lieben,
And welcome to day 17 of our Advent Calendar. And behind today’s door is one of the oldest traditions of the YourDailyGerman Advent Calendar… drumroll…
Break Day
Yeaaay!
And no, I am not breaking with this tradition ;).
Originally, in the first years, the breakday was the day when I wasn’t able to keep up anymore with posting daily, because my preparation was worse and also I was still working as a bar manager. Sometimes, I would literally post after a 10 hour shift, sipping a drink at the bar.
And after a few years, the breakday had become so dear to me that I did it even if I didn’t have to, and now it’s pretty much a tradition.
So yeah… break day everyone :).
There’s a slight modificication though, because there are three little things that I do want to mention.
First little thing:
First up, big shoutout to the OGs that were already here when there was still WordPress snow!
I was REALLY surprised by the results of the questionaire this year, in particular by the resulst of the onion vs garlic question.
Here’s a screenshot:

Like… garlic and onion having such a head to head is a surprise, but the BIGGER surprise for me is that barely anyone said “neither”.
I love both of them, but in Berlin, I feel like I have met SOOO many people who don’t eat either or just in very small amounts.
If you want to check the other results in the questionaire, you can find it here:
Second little thing:
There’s like almost 80 of you who have installed my sentence analyzer Chrome extension. Apperantly, you can install it on Opera and Edge, too, but it will not work. It only works on Chrome and Brave.
So far, only two people have left a review, so if you have it installed and it’s working, please please leave a review. Danke :).
You can find the extension here:
YDG Grammar Analyzer Extension
Third little thing
And this is a recommendation for a movie/documentary.
It’s called David Wants to Fly and it’s a personal point of view style documentary about a guy from Berlin who seeks answers in meditation and who’s a big fan of David Lynch, who’s also into meditation.
And boy oh boy… this is a crazy ride. Switzerland, India, the Himalayas, Gurus, money, money, money, Nazis, Berlin Teufelsberg… and David Lynch defending Hitler.
Honestly, it’s one of the greatest little pieces of film I have ever seen and I REALLY recommend it!!
And it’s partly in German, with voice over narration, so perfect to learn with.
Here’s the German trailer:
Please please give it a watch, it’s absolutely amazing and will surprise you. And do let me know how you liked it once you’ve watched it :)
Anyway, that’s it for today. Enjoy your third Advent and break day and I’ll see you tomorrow. Bis dann!

For some reason I watched this movie like 10 years ago and one of my only memories of it was that fricking ‘Eraserhead’ was that guy’s favourite movie. And yet if it hadn’t been, I doubt this documentary would exist.
While it’s always nice to have a break day, having two break days in a row makes a weak end.
What do you mean?
It’s a pun. :D Well played, Anonymous.
Ohhhhh, took me a minute but I just got it :)
I think I would have more confidence in the Garmmar Analyzer if Grammar were spelt correctly.
Nevertheless, it does produce some quite useful observations on a sentence. However, I was surprised just how short a sentence had to be before the analyser gave up. Early days I suppose.
I would think its main use would be for those starting out on their German learning expedition.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
I set a cap to the length of the sentence, I can change that easily, but I wanted to wait with the changes for some feedback to roll in, because once I submit a new package, Google takes a while to implement it. That’s why also the typo is still there.
Interesting movie. I almost would have thought it was a mockumentary if Wikipedia hadn’t told me it was real.
I found myself kind of on edge most of the time. One, because there’s this nice but kind of naive guy who dives head-first into something that (to me) has red flags all over it. And also because you see people who are looking for peace and happiness, and other people who take advantage of that.
I think my two favorite moments (the most peaceful) were when Marie’s grandma started singing in Romanian and when David and Marie were on Teufelsberg at the end.
Yeah right?? It’s so absurd, it does seem like a Mockumentary. Real life is like that, for better or worse :D
Haha! Ich mache nur heute karamellisierte Zwiebeln und Knoblauch zum Mittagessen. Lecker!
I was reading your German Nuggets posts this morning and after about 3 or 3 I think it said I have to join to see more. I already have a membership to YourDailyGerman. Is there a separate membership for GermanNuggets?
Yes, German Nuggets is a separate project. There’s about 70 nuggets there at the moment and I have a list for more, but I don’t have much time to work on it at the moment.
The counter resets every few hours, so maybe just check every now and then :)
Rest and relax. I myself needed time to read a couple of the advent posts that I had to miss. Thanks.
ich habe mir den Film angesehen, aber er war nicht ‘meine Tasse Tee’ – sorry, muss ich ehrlich sein.
Schade :).Aber ja klar, ist nicht für jeden was, dieser Stil.
Haha! Well deserved break…
Where’s the film available? (I hope you don’t say Netflix, but I have a feeling you will)
Bis Morgen!
I think you can get it on Prime video at the moment.
Looks like a great film. I’m really excited. I’m in Australia and can’t get it on Prime but will keep trying and let you know.
If these are the sort of films you like, please let me know of any more. As this is totally the sort of things I like.
Thank you
