All correct.
Thank you for the Advents calendar. Worked on my mobile.
Wishing you a happy and successful new year.
All correct
40% ugh. I got every one of the last question wrong. I’ll come back to this but really, that was bad.
Don’t read too much into it. The format, having them all side by side, really “encourages” getting confused and second guessing. Curious how you’ll do the second time around!
Still doesn’t work for me on my phone
The drag and drop works fine for me on my Pixel 4 (Android 12) today. Did it get fixed already? If not that might be a useful data point for the devs.
I changed the load order of some javascript files, but it still doesn’t work on my phone. Maybe a cache issue.
So how does it look for you? Do you grab the thing with one tap or do you have to do like double tap or something?
I don’t know how, I just went with my gut and got 86%. Some answers I was able to eliminate and the others, I made an educated guess and in 14% educated guesses don’t work. Thank you for encouraging us to give it another go at a later date.
86% is pretty darn good!! Your gut deserves a treat for sure :)
I’m wondering where Angeber should be placed on the Gernegroß – Protz – Angeber spectrum.
When I worked my first job in a German Redaktion, die Madels would talk about one dude as an “Angeber” – I hadn’t heard that word before, but the tone indicated it was nicht so schön.
The guy was, ehrlich gesagt, a loser – and it seemed clear he was more a boaster than someone with abilities.
Since then I’ve become unsure if Angeber implies someone has or hasn’t skills to back up their high-fallutin-ness.
Are Germans mostly peeved that someone dares to be über-arrogant, irrespective of talent?
I find a show-off to be someone with at least some abilities, whose flaunting creates the surrounding negativity.
No matter – I know I’m friggin great.
Not the best – cause that would imply someone could be compared to me.
Hmm, interesting question.
To me, “Angeber” implies that you do have something to show, but you’re overly proud or braggadocios.
Of course people can also “angeben” with stuff they don’t really have, but once that comes out, I’d call them a “Faker” or “Lügner”.
As long as it’s not clear, Angeber works fine.
Think of it as the opposite of “humble” maybe. YOu can have a lot and be humble or have little and be humble. Same for an Angeber.
oops! Heurig = This Year’s
Ich verstehe es als “of these days”
Ah, benutzen die das regelmäßig, oder was? Ich kenne es, aber NIEMAND sagt es.
What he ☝️ said!!! Love these!….even if it doesn’t work on mein Handy!
Glad you like it despite the tech issues :)
From hero to zero. Work to do here!
Hahaha, oh nooooo :)!! Another self confidence shattered by this type of quiz.
Drag answers not possible on ipad
Also didn’t work on my android phone :/
Yup, apparently it stopped working on any mobile device. I’m waiting for the devs to respond.
Hello!
No typos :)
Got two wrong, but one was a distraction (aufgeben – I knew that but clicked on aus – stupid mistake)
But I really didn’t now that vergeben means to forgive (I normally use verzeihen) and am still finding it hard to wrap my mind around that one!
Bis morgen!
“verzeihen” is the perfect choice for the “misdeeds” of daily life. “vergeben” is a bit more grand.
Do you mean you have a problem with the word “verzeihen”?
No, I have a problem understanding vergeben ;)
Oh, and what is the meaning of herausgeben? Does it differ from plain geben?
Actually, I’ll refer you to the dictionary for that one :)
https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary/?s=herausgeben
Thanks, the Jesus thing is a great way to memorise as well :)
By the way, you have “aufweisen” listed in the aus verbs section of the dictionary ;)
Fixed! Danke :)
What is Jesus thing?
Think Jesus!
HUH?
Jesus forgiving Judas, God forgiving our sins, that’s too big for verzeihen.
Thank you for clarifying! I was lost and confused Thank you for clarifying! I was lost and confused until you added the explanation!
I wasn’t familiar with vergeben as “to forgive”, either, mostly I know it as “in a relationship”.
Yup, “forgive” is only one of the meanings of “vergeben”. “give away/ give out” is another one, and “taken” in a relationship is basically the ge-form of that one.
Related topic, what would you say is the most common/colloquial translation of “in vain”, as in “without success”? vergeblich, vergebens, umsonst, …?
Definitely “umsonst” in spoken, but in (prose) writing “vergeblich” is also used a lot.
Cool, diggah!
Dunno – got all the ones in Teil 1 correct but
couldn’t drag the words into the slots – did repeat the words/definitions outloud to review. Guessing I got those right, as well.
Can’t we also use verzeihen and nachgeben to forgive?
Angeben was easy because of ”Angeber” but can one also say ”prahlen”?
drag and drop doesn’t seem to work on mobile anymore. I didn’t know that, otherwise I would not have included these questions. Feeling pissed. So many software issues this year :/
“verzeihen” work fine for “forgive”. It’s actually better for smaller “sins”.
“nachgeben” is “to give in”, in an argument for example.
“prahlen” also works for “angeben”. Maybe it’s a bit more like “flaunting”.
It’s nowhere near as commonly used though. “angeben” is the better pick most of the time.
Not in the children’s books I read! Lotsa prahlen there. More recently written Jugendbücher use Angeber a lot – in a tone/context that means show off.
Did I write nachgeben? Duh – nachgeben means to give in, succomb. Head up the arse syndrome – like your Judenwort instead of Jugendwort. What I MEANT was nachsehen.
Nachsehen in the sense that one would perhaps not officially „forgive“ someone but unofficially „forgive“ by letting them get away with something that is perhaps not usually allowed.
A Judenwort, by the way, would be: Oj, vej, or schmuck, or shicksa. Or maschugganah. Or, Schmear.
Haha!
Funny you mention Schmuck… that’s coming up in the calendar :).
As for nachsehen… that sounds VERY formal, and I never hear it in daily life. Only use it if you want to angeben with your vocabulary.
The noun die Nachsicht is more common. And “Nachsicht walten lassen”. Think of a teacher in elementary school being easy on some pranksters.
It works fine on a desktop but on mobile (ios) drags don’t work and even correct answers get logged at wrong.
So the darg and drop issue is not limited to iOS, the software can’t handle a mobile phone anymore, it seems.
But the wrong logging, that’s a new bug :/ :/ :/
couldn’t drag the answers. But I liked it. Thank you
Ich habe nicht gut getaway.
And the drag-answers could not be dragged.
getan, not getaway
“gemacht”. “getan” passt nicht.
mine wouldn’t drag either (and that IS a drag!)
Yup, I agree. It used to work when I did this type of quiz last year, but now it doesn’t :(.
Yeah, I just realized that. It’s the quiz software. Something changed there. It worked a year ago, but now it doesn’t for some reason :(
