Is this then the proper Oberbegriff for sound? And then “Ton” and “Geräusch” fall under this category? I’d always assumed Ton was the Oberbegriff and didn’t actually know this word outside of “Schallplatte”. Does Schall sound a bit formal or not really?

“Schall” is the carrier of Geräusch and Ton. or the “medium” of it.

It’s a mass noun and you cannot say “Ich höre einen Schall.” so I would say that it’s NOT the Oberbegriff for “Ton” and “Geräusch”.

Wikipedia defines “Geräusch” as follows:

“Geräusch (verwandt mit „Rauschen“) ist ein Sammelbegriff für alle Hörempfindungen, die nicht als Klang, Ton, Tongemisch, Zusammenklang oder Klanggemisch bezeichnet werden können. “

Based on that, I guess the Oberbegriff is “Hörempfindung”.
