How should i understand “in der Tat” ? I’ve seen “es ist in der Tat…” translated as “It is indeed…”
Depends on the text and context.
It can lean toward “tatsaechlich/no doubt” or it can lean toward reaffirmation, which is how I perceive “indeed”.
– “Claim!”
– “Claim, indeed!”
Can you explain the reaffirmation thing a bit futŕther perhaps?
So when I say that you have to buy your beer before 8pm in Norway or you won’t get any, you’d be like ” OMG, that sucks.”
and I’d say “That does suck, indeed.”
Affirming what you said already, or what was contextually established. I feel like this notion is pretty strong in indeed.
yeah, that is indeed a notion strong within the word indeed.
Interested what you think about the context i saw this actually. “Indeed” does work here, so does “no doubt”…also “in fact” would work well too i think, all three don’t really have much meaning (other than maybe to emphasise )
„Den Kaiser – diese Weltseele – sah ich durch die Stadt zum Rekognizieren hinausreiten; – es ist in der Tat eine wunderbare Empfindung, ein solches Individuum zu sehen, das hier auf einen Punkt konzentriert, auf einem Pferde sitzend, über die Welt übergreift und sie beherrscht.”
OMG, rekognizieren, lol. That must be a text from the “French phase” of German. NO one would use that nowaday.
It’s hard to judge these older texts in terms of modern vocabulary. Like… I don’t really know how in der Tat felt to the author, I can just ee it through my lens, but that can be hugely different than the author’s.
It doesn’t have anything to reaffirm here, so it’ really just an intensifier. I think I might translate it as “it truly is…” or “it certainly is” in this context. I guess indeed work too, but I do dislike “in fact”. That’s too sensationalist, if that makes sense.
cool thanks, thats great.
Thus Tatort?!
Yes, it’s literally the “deed location”.
