I have found, in the book das Restaurant am Rande der Zeit, the expression “nicht einmal”, that I thought was to be translated “not even once”, while it actually has the opposite meaning. The phrase is: Nicht einmal ein Jahr nach Beginn seines Studiums verkündete Yuito, dieses wieder abbrechen zu wollen.“ What is the meaning of this expression?

is it possible (or common ) to see this in formulations where you might use something like “einerseits / anderseits” . For example Ich bin auf einmal froh und doch traurig ” e.g. I am happy and sad at the same time”
