The lamp in the middle is an oil lamp and does not need electricity.
gushov and anonymus, MARRY ME!
Brains really are the sexiest attribute. That and nice shoes.
P.S. I’m already married but there is always space for the best, and, you’ll really like my spouse.
I’ve heard this one before. Very clever and neat solution and not at all obvious. Anyone who comes up with the answer by themselves will be a veritable genius of lateral thought.
I should add, I came nowhere near to guessing it right when I first heard it.
Ah! I see Mr Gushov has come through with the solution. Hats off to that man.
Indeed. I never get stuff like this figured out, even though, when in the actual situation, I might think of exactly that. I’m quite practical, but not in theory :)
How do we know gushov is a man?
I’m guessing you’re reading this on your phone which may explain why you can’t see the photograph of Mr Gushov and his luxuriant beard.
Nope – iPad actually, which has always, until recently, showed the Gravatars. Upon arriving home, on the laptop, which also no longer shows the Gravatars. Now, in bed on the iPhone which I honestly don’t know if it ever showed Gravatars – I rarely use it to surf onto German-is-Easy.
Too bad he has a beard. I prefer men that are clean-shaven. The proposal for marriage is no longer valid, then.
You’re right. I’m back on my desktop PC now and where have all the thumbnail photos and wiggly monsters gone?
They’re back! Software gone rogue was the issue.
Hi Emanuel,
I know this will sound stupid but maybe Maria got an electric shock when she turned the other two switches on and so she knows that the third switch must be the right one if the lamp is lit! Or, like someone has already mentioned, maybe the unicorn told her!!!!
Btw, can you explain to me why the dative is used in “Als Thomas auf dem Boden ankommt” and why “im in” is used in “bleiben im in Hals stecken”?
And here comes the usual typo alert: When you wrote “The get stuck”, you forgot the word “words”… “The words get stuck”…
Well, the thing is that Maria actually knows ALL the switches, not just one. So she knows which switch is for which lamp.
Good question about “ankommen”. It suggests there is a change of location but I guess German considers it as already being on the spot. Think of a bus that lowers down so people can exit. The ankommen happens when you’re already there. Yeah… it’s completely counterintuitive but that’s how it is.
The other one is a double typo. Should be “ihm im”
Pretty sure I know. :)
By the way, at least on my monitor, the yellow text for the hint is dark enough to read easily without highlighting – might be worth making it lighter for the stubborn folks who want to figure it out all on their own.
That is really weird. I mean, I can read it, too, but ONLY if I focus on it. I guess I have to do more buttons :)
Turn the first switch on, turn the second switch on and then back off, leave the third switch off. The first lamp is on, the second lamp is off but the light bulb is warm, and third lamp is off and the light bulb is cold.
Might be correct. But I can’t be sure unless I see it auf Deutsch ;)
Seriously, did you come up with that?
Actually, we don‘t know if the lamp in the middle is lit. The story says that when Thomas comes to the room, the lamps are lit. He mentions the middle lamp, bur we don‘t know what he says about it becase the cold hands are on his throat. Perhaps the middle lamp ISN‘T lit and she only threw two switches, which means that the switch she didn‘t throw belongs to the middle lamp.
The thing is, she know about all three switches and lamps, not just the middle one :).
But you’re right…. Thomas could actually have been about to say “aus”. In my head it was a clear “an” but I forgot that they start the same way.
If it were telephones, it would be easy, just check the color of the wires.
Lamps. Hmmm… dunno?
Perhaps she unscrewed one of the bulbs BEFORE she went down to the cellar, flipped one switch, no reaction from Thomas, flipped the other switch, Thomas yells that one is lit, and now she knows that the third switch belongs to the unlit lamp that is still screwed in.
Or, the unicorn told her.
Nice theory but no, she didn’t touch a lamp BEFORE she went down.
by the way, the lamps are all pretty lit. Because they’re vintage ;);)
