Hello everyone,
and welcome to our German Word of the Day, this time, we’ll take a look at the meaning of
holen
Imagine you and a few people are at a friend’s place. You’re chatting and it’s great fun, but then you notice that your beer is empty. What’s the natural thing to do? Exactly, you go home, do some Kundalini Yoga and then you go to bed in order to rise early and study. Or in one word: holen. So wholesome. Just kidding. Of course you’d go to the fridge and get another beer. And THAT’S what holen is … to go get, to fetch.

With these tips you get the most out of your work out.“ 2) Bin jetzt in Deutschland!
Super schoen!! Geniesst Münster und badet im Kanal.

Servus! I’m just a little bit confused as to the difference between einholen and aufholen. If I wanted to say “You guys go on ahead – I’ll catch up,” would I use ein or auf? Danke! :-)
Is the reason you used hochholen instead of raufholen because aufholen is strongly associated with catch up ? or does raufholen work too please?
• Maria will jetzt alles nachholen, was sie in ihren Zwanzigern verpasst hat. Am i right in thinking einholen (or aufholen) can’t simply be used as subsitutes of nachholen in this sentence ? Or could they?
“raufholen” and “aufholen” are like two completely independent verbs in a native speaker’s mind. “hochholen” is just more idiomatic to me, but people do use “raufholen” also.
“Aufholen” doesn’t taint the meaning of “raufholen” here.
As for “nachholen” vs the other two… “nachholen” is specifically about doing what you have not done earlier. The action is the target here.
For “einholen” and “aufholen” the “target” is some entity that is moving forward (a car, a person, a body of knowledge).
Just rereading the article….
Could one also say „Der Löwe rennt so schnell als er kann“ or is this just me wanting to translate directly how this sentence would work in english please?
Could nachholen work here instead of aufholen:
“Wieviel Bier hast du schon?” “Drei.” “Oh, ich muss aufholen.”
No, “so schnell als er kann” is not proper high German. Might be used in some regions, and maybe in old books, but do not learn it.
As for the second question:
If you use “nachholen” then you’re saying you want to do/complete the act of drinking three beers “at some point”, but there is no notion of the other person being ahead and you needing to catch up or drinking more.
You can’t “nachholen” people, you can only “nachholen” activities. So you could “nachholen” a get together.
“Wir wollten uns letztes Jahr sehen.”
“Ja, wir müssen DAS unbedingt nachholen.”
For time, the word is “aufholen”. The only instance where nachholen works for “things” is for food if you get a second serving.
Ich hole mir noch was nach.
But you need to go and get it. A waiter bringing it would not be “holen” :)

Hi Herr Emanuel-
Okay first of, no one would ever say “herunterholen”. People say “runterholen”. That sounds like a typical textbook dialogue to me.
Was die Bedeutung angeht… “runterholen” heißt definitiv “take down/hand down”.
Da sagt man “bestellen” normalerweise.

That was so interesting. I really dig the semantic evolution of the words and how the prefix are explained in context. The humor is priceless as well, it helps a lot to digest all the complexities and subtle differences of meaning the prefixes make on the root verb. Vielen Dank, Emanuel, das ist ganz toll!
Hi can anyone tell me how often these are published? I paid my subscription in full but it’s now 14th January and this email dated 6th January is the only one I’ve received so I am worried I may have been left out of the list. However, I’m not sure how often the emails are published. Thanks. Denise
For anyone who is confused… I post every 7 to 10 days. That’s when I send an email. The membership is NOT an email course.

I like this article. Would this be correct – ich will im Keller gehen, um ein selbstgemachtes Bier zu runterholen. Can I say that using darauf, instead of um … zu?

First of all, thank you for the amazing post!
For wegen, shouldn’t this be a genitiv? Wegen des Sturms? Or does wegen also have a case where it takes the dative case?
Hello everyone! I just signed up here and wanted to express my gratitude. I couldn’t pay for the premium plan since I’m living in Iran and trying to learn German as best as I can. So I emailed Emanuel about it, and He let me know that there are people here who have paid some extra to help out folks like me. I’m genuinely delighted and grateful for it, and I hope you all have a great year ahead of you :) Thanks to everyone, and Thank you, Emanuel ;)

Einhorn 1 : Es was 3 uhr….I brauch etwas Zeit zur Erholung und Schlafen
Einhorn 1 : Keine… Gründe
Ende von Gespräch
I couldn’t think of a good example for nachholen. Also, another advice. I know its obvious, but you should mention that sich einen runterholen is vulgar since sometimes people are way too bright like Me.
Teil 2 – Fragen)
1 – So I could technically use holen with people, but this would objective them as stuff lying around?
2 – Wie viel Bier hast du schon?” “Drei.” “Oh, ich muss aufholen.” “How many beers have you had already?” “Three.” “Oh, I have to catch up.”
How does fit this example fir the notion of race? A side note : I have read someone before implying that aufholen can carry the notion of both getting equel and racing then and that einholen can have both equel and ahead association.
3) what would be the suitble words for aufholen, einholen und überhoren in sense of achievements/ knowledge
Teil 3 – Notizen ( Mostly pointless story) )
Achtung : pointless story
Bringen –> You/sb bring sth to you/sb Holen —> Bringen + Platz Abholen —> Holen + time Bekommen : You get stuff Besorgen —> Holen?
CesarRiv
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this already but in English sich einen runterholen can also be translated to “knock one out” so it’s pretty similar
Thanks for another informative post. I was surprised that wiederholen wasn’t listed. Is that not a word in common usage? It’s the first one that came up in Duolingo (and the only one besides holen).
Oh boy, I actually forgot about that one :D. No idea how that happened, honestly! It definitely is common and important. I’ll probably add a section on that when I have time!!

“einholen” is about actually reaching the same “level”.
“aufholen” is just about gaining ground.
So you can “aufholen” but still be behind, but “einholen” means you’ve caught up completely.
Hope that helps.
Incredible work. Shall we haul that NSFW (NSFwankers) behind an eponymous dropdown, or not?
You mean instead of a new tab? That’d be more convenient, I guess.
can’t get rid of chat box

Cool thanks very much for the thorough explanation!
Good day –
Would nachholen be used if you haven’t seen someone for a while and say :
Wir muessen uns nachholen
similarly when used for time – such as we fell behind now we have to make up some time:
Wir müssen uns etwas Zeit nachholen
Many many thanks
You can’t “nachholen” people, you can only “nachholen” activities. So you could “nachholen” a get together.
