My first dumb question since subscribing to your excellent site! If I want to say “the cat eats its food”, and I don’t know whether the cat is biologically a male or a female, do I use “ihren” because die Katze is grammatically feminine? If I happen to know the cat is biologically male, do I use “seinen”?
Good question!
If you use “Katze” then yes, you’d say “ihr-” because the gender of the word itself matters more.
If you have a male cat and you want to make that clear, you’d user “der Kater” and “sein”.
“meine Katze” and “sein” together sounds awkward to me.
