My favorite source for the origin of English words.
I‘ve gone down a bit of a rabbit hole with letztlich , letztendlich , schließlich , and now endlich. I still seem to get a bit confused, unfortunately. Can you offer any guidelines?thanks!
“schließlich” – more about drawing a conclusion.
– Ich gehe früh ins Bett. Ich muss schließlich morgen früh raus.
In books you may also see it in a sense of closure but that’s rare.
“endlich” – finally, at long last… the core idea here is some sort of wait being over.
“letztlich” – this one is hard to grasp for me. I can understand it in context, but I cannot really describe what it means right now. I never use it actively
“letzendlich” – at the end of the day … this is about “gettin to the core of an issue” in my understanding.
Does that help in anyway?
“after all” also would include the sense of “after all” which indicates that an exception was made because it is a special occasion right? Or more generally that something is justified because of something?
“Statt der üblichen Sylvester Premiere gibt est schon am 13. Dez eine neue Produktion. Schließlich hat man an diesem Tag 80. Geburtstag”
Oh yeah, 100%.
– Du hast einen ganzen Elch für das BBQ bestellt?
– Klar. Man wird schließlich nur einmal 27.
lol. I think this word is tricky for learners actually (or at least me) but I think i’m getting the hang of it..
