struggling a bit with this one. On linguee the examples seems to be translated as otherwise which doesn’t seem to have any sense of place.
It gives “elsewhere” as a translation, which of course does imply a sense of place.
Do you think “wonaders” could a synonm for “anderweitig” in some instances and simply with “andere” in other instances
Does these work:
Das Bier ist anderweitig (the beer is somewhere else)
Ich möchte es anderswetig machen (i want to do it in a different way)
gehst du anderweitig ? (are you going somewhere else)
“anderweitig” is a tricky one actually.
I wrote “slight notion of location” because there some location component but it’s not really a go to when talking about location.
Neither “elsewhere” nor “otherwise” really capture it.
“woanders” is like a default word for “somewhere else” while “anderweitig” is a VERY niche word. “woanders” sounds more “location-ish” than “anderweitig” but it can be swapped in but you cannot just put “anderweitig” in place of “woanders”. That usually won’t be idiomatic.
None of your examples work, and they wouldn’t even necessarily be understandable.
Part of the reason is that you forgot to add a destination /origin marking…. like “von” or “zu”.
But also, “anderweitig” isn’t really ever a good answer to “where”. At least not as a stand alone.
The second example doesn’t work because there’s NO sense of location in your translation (you’re talking about “how”).
A classic example for “anderweitig” is this:
Thanks for this. It does seem to be an elusive word. Or its eluding me. Your comments about the examples were useful though. I learn as much from knowing something is not correct as if it is.
Putting Duden’s examples into DeepL is interesting.
eine anderweitige Vergabe
it suggests to allocate elsewhere
but also
to allocate differently
then
etwas anderweitig vergeben
it suggests to allocate elsewhere
but also
to allocate something else
The last translation doesn’t work. The object is definitely “etwas” and “anderweitig” just expresses that this something goes somewhere else.
“differently” talks about “how” funds are allocated, “elsewhere” talks about “where” they’re allocated, but of course that can essentially mean the same, so here, DeepL is correct.
I think part of my confusion is not recognising it is an adverb.
Does this work:
Das Essen möchte ich in der Küche vorbereiten, die getränke soll aber andersweitig vorberietet werden.
or this
Die Kisten kommen in die Küche, außer die gelbe. Sie werden anderweitig gelagert.
The second sounds pretty good. The first example is just too mundane for a “formal” word like “anderweitig”.
Thanks, but other than the formality of tone being off with the first sentence would work grammatically?
Here is it reworked, kinda
Die Firma möchte das Essen im Frankreich produzieren lassen, außer
die Bonbons , die andersweitig produziert werden sollen.
The reworked version sounds 100% idiomatic.
But the word is “anderweitig” without “s”. A mistake you’ll probably keep making for the next few years, always getting angry at yourself :D
Yeah, I have also spelled it anderswertig so I already have a record in that respect. Maybe this word will finally make me rage quit!
