German Advent Calendar – Day 22

German Advent Calendar - Day 22

“Let’s Order”

Hello everyone,

Welcome to day number 22 of this year’s Advent Calendar. The final stretch. And since it’s Monday again, let’s get active one last time and do a little quiz, this time about

Word Order

Now, in prior calendars, I’ve often had a word order exercise where I would give you a group of single short sentences that you had to combine into one big one. Which is fun and a great practice but it’s super duper work intensive for me because it really works best if you all get individual feedback for each of your versions.

The general problem with word order exercises is that there usually isn’t THE ONE correct solution. Especially once a sentence a moderate length, there can be a DOZEN of correct versions, and the differences are often very fine and highly contextual.

That’s hard to capture in an exercise and sadly, AI is not reliable enough to navigate all these subtleties either.

But anyway… today, I want to try out a new type of exercise that is basically built around the fact that there’s more than one correct answer.

I'll send an email whenever I post a new lesson (once per week usually).

Here’s what we’ll do:

I’ll give you a sentence in English and then give you 4 translations in German. And your task is to “rank” them from most to least natural sounding.
You don’t have to focus on the English original too much. So don’t try to analyze what nuance I am trying to express with the phrasing. It’s just meant as fairly neutral without special emphasis and the German ones should be ranked that way too.

All you have to do is drag and drop them around and when you think you got it you check.

And then, you’ll see the solution along with a short explanation of how each version sounds so you have an idea why it is where it is.

It’s a short quiz, with 3 questions, but you’ll probably be puzzling a bit and I didn’t want to make it overwhelming. If you like the format, we can do longer ones next year.

So, if you’re ready, I’d say … viel Spaß

So, how did you do?
I did try to make it so the options and orderings are fairly unambiguous but it’s well possible that I overlooked something. So if you feel like a sentence should or could be higher or lower in one of the sets, please let me know.
Oh and just to make sure… those were NOT all the possible options for these sentences. There are way more and also more fairly neutral sounding ones.

So if you have any questions about any of these or some alternative order, please let me know in the comments.
And of course if you have questions about my explanations, let me know as well. This is a huge topic and it’s hard to squeeze into short answers like in the quiz if you don’t have the background, but I can definitely clear it up or give you pointers to my lessons about this, so don’t be too shy to ask, even if you’re A1.

That’s it for today folks, I hope you enjoyed this one and maybe got some new insights. Have a great day and I’ll see you in the comments or tomorrow.
Bis dann :)
