Late to the game, but I love these words! Thanks for sharing, brother.
I agree there’s not an exact English equivalent, at least in the US. We do have the term “mental image,” but that’d be closer to a “Kopfbild” assuming Germans would say such a thing. If I get Kopfkino’s meaning, then it’s a bit different than daydreaming. Hmmm…if I had to express the idea of Kopfkino, I’d probably say something like “a scene playing out in my mind.” Regardless, Kopfkino definitely wins for sheer style.
Yeah, Kopfkino is definitely different than daydreaming. I mean, some German may have used it at some point in that very sense, but normally, the vibe and context is a bit different.
It’s funny to find that such a word as Kopfkino exists, because it seems to suit me so well. I… have something called ‘maladaptive daydreaming’ (which I will call Kopfkino from now on), which basically means that I spend a disproportionate amount of my waking time daydreaming. That’s rather positive Vorstellungen, that keep me from falling in the Gedankenkarussel actually. So the films I play don’t match the genre of the German Kopfkino that’s inclining more towards thriller-suspense-horror kind of stuff, right? That’s too bad, because it’s such a cute word – as is Gedankenkarussel. They reminds me of a Stephan King movie, the one with the clown.
Yeah, “Kopfkino” does lean toward suspense, thriller and so on, but you can also use it for a green meadow with cute bunnies :)
Really enjoyed this post and the one about recent usage of dürfen! Just short quick bites about idioms/slangs and modern language helps fill in the gaps (and feels a bit more useful at times) between all the other formal grammatical stuff!
Happy to hear that!! I’m planning to do more posts like these next year and also more exercises on expressions and so on.
Das ständige Kopfkino hindert mich daran, einzuschlafen…..manchmal schrei ich innerlich mein Gehirn an: halt die Fresse und lass mich mal in Ruhe….ich muss schlafen! :) Klingt das idiomatisch, Emanuel?
Wow, das war PERFEKT!!
I’ve heard Kopfkino being used but not noticed Gedankenkarussel so far. But I think both are great examples of one of my favourite aspects of German – that you can understand a lot of nouns just from context and knowing what the parts of the word mean.
Tiny correction: it should be “merry-go-round” (with hyphens, and ’round’ rather than ‘around’). I’m not sure about internationally but in the UK I think it’s more common to use ‘carousel’ to refer to the big ones at a funfair with the horses on poles, whereas if it’s a little one in a park that kids sit on and spin until they feel sick it’s definitely a ‘merry-go-round’. But would also be interested to know if that’s the same for other native speakers…
My 2¢ as an American English speaker:
definitely merry-go-round, not around, except maybe once I read it with ‘around’ in a really really old book but otherwise merry-go-round.
I don’t think we make a huge distinction b/t the two as, from my experience, we’re much more likely to say merry-go-round than carousel (though you won’t get weird looks if you use the latter). merry-go-round is the one with horses on poles. looking it up now the playground ones have many different names they go by including merry-go-round but i’ve never ever thought of them by that name, it was just ‘that spinny thing’ to me but perhaps someone else from the US did refer to it as merry-go-rounds as playground nomenclature is not my forte
I’d hazard a guess that “that spinny thing” isn’t what the manufacturers refer to it as haha
I agree. In the United States, we have a tendency to use merry–go-round for both. I associate the use of “carousel” with songs or dialogs in love stories.
“my thoughts were going round in circles” “I pictured him sneaking up behind the bear, slowly getting closer and closer until…..”
Also, cinema related: I like the phrase “großes Kino”, what do you think of that one?
“großes Kino” is quite common though I find it a bit too “restrained” (no idea how else to put it). At least if used for a genuinely positive, impressive thing. Because then, I’d expect a more visceral word choice and not a tempered expression :)
i get that now you say it. something like “geflasht” sounds much more viceral right? Thanks!
Ja, es gibt echt viele Optionen, wie
– Wow, das ist krass/mega/übergeil/…
Zu sagen…
– Wow, großes Kino.
… to me sounds a bit like there’s some sort of shield in front of the personality.
alles klar, danke dir!
It’s not really an equivalent, but “emotional rollercoaster” is the phrase that “Gedankenkarussell” evoked for me.
There is no equivalent in Russian or in Italian (2 languages I know the best). Love Kopfkino and Gedankenkarussell, will use them for sure! Thank you.
I can’t concentrate because my mind is spinning.
I don’t think there is an exact American English equivalent. In addition to the expressions below we have “mind games” or “head games.” That might be pretty close. They can be good or bad but with them there is a strong sense of error — your mind is playing tricks on you, you’re fooling yourself in your thoughts. There was even a hit rock song in my youth from Foreigner titled Head Games.
Could you say in German, “Mein Kopfkino macht Überstunden”, or something similar, to equate to the English expression, “My imagination was working overtime”, or more extremely “My imagination was running wild”?
Yeah, that would work. People would understand what you mean.
I’ve heard ‘mental movie’ but it’s certainly not in widespread use. It does, however, have a more idiomatic feel. In American English, we’re much more likely to use ‘movie’ than ‘cinema’ in ANY context.
Ich vergleiche es mit dem Rennmauskäfig, wo die Rennmaus auf dem Rad läuft und so für immer weitermacht. Zwei neue perfekte Worte für mich. Mein Kopfkino oder mein Gedankenkarussell.
I agree with others that there is nothing quite like Kopfkino in English. I would approximate it by saying I had a repeating loop running through my head, but that’s not quite the same. Maybe the loop would be analogous more to Gedankenkarussell.
Ruminations are not as insidious
as you are suggesting. They are more like calm, measured, and protracted inner thoughts.
Ruminations are not as insidious
as you are suggesting. They are more like calm, measured, and protracted inner thoughts.
Are you sure about that? I know the word from a context of psychology and people suffering from ruminating thoughts and the thoughts are neither calm nor measured. But that might just be one context of many.
I guess many traits or behaviors can become pathological in the extreme, but if my boss told me she wanted to ruminate over a suggestion I made, I would be flattered that she was taking it so seriously.
Also a quick Dictionary check confirmed the idea of slow calm contemplation without reference mental disorders or obsessions.
Oh, that’s a great example. That’s really not how I had the word saved in my mind then. I didn’t know it could be legit positive. Also, because the main translation for “ruminating” is “grübeln” and that has a negative touch.
Ruminate is not a word in my active vocab and not one i was really sure i 100% knew but i didn’t get a negative vibe either. I checked my dictionary and it says “engage in contemplation” which seems neutral. I did google “ruminating thoughts” and there is a wikipedia page on it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumination_(psychology) so it seems the word has a specific use within psyhology….. I wonder if this is a bit like the word “rationalise” which would be understood different in everyday english compared to a psychological setting where is has a much more specific meaning.
US psychologists do use “ruminating” to describe an unhelpful and often extremely debilitating obsession with rerunning the same thoughts or concerns. Having said that, outside the psychology usage I have also heard “ruminating” used in a positive sense and I’ve used it that way myself.
Kopfkino is fantastic! English definitely needs an equivalent.
I agree that ruminations can be pleasant or unpleasant depending on the context, and either way it’s a lower-volume thought pattern rather than a loud, obsessive one. One could ruminate on the imminence of global apocalypse, or on the lovely glitter of moonlight in the lake, or both.
i’ll echo what everyone else is saying, ruminate for me definitely doesn’t lean negative or have any negative connotations to it. a very good synonym would be contemplate. it just means to devote time to think about something (though it has a bit more of a “zen” feel to it than contemplate though just slightly, like you’re putting some level of effort into thinking about something but you’re open to letting the answers/thoughts/solutions come to you instead of just concentrating super duper hard on something). like if someone asks me a question I might say “I think the answer is x but let me ruminate a bit on that and I’ll get back to you with a more definitive answer”
not an everyday word you’d hear but one I’ve def used before because my vocab can be a bit pretentious *ahem*wanker-y*ahem*
Ruminating is effortless, a mind floating as it will, like a cow lying in a sunny meadow chewing on grass, and chewing and chewing, eyes dreamy and unfocused, at peace. Or, a person ruminating over a conversation as he drives home after work.
Hi guys, i am a biginner, so its difficult for me to understand because germans speaks so fast

Im Französich benutz man ” film/ Cinema interieur” im Umgagangsprache ” und
” rumination” in gehobene Sprache ( insbesondere in der Psychologiebracnche ) .
Bis Morgen .
FWIW, I don’t think the phrase ruminating thoughts is commonly used in English. The word is a bit more often seen as a verb (I couldn’t stop ruminating over it), or a noun (I succumbed to excessive rumination), but it’s fairly rare and kinda lofty.
The more everyday English phrase would be racing thoughts, or something like my mind was racing, or my thoughts were churning. Definitely not as Kopfkino-isch as Gedankenkarussell though!
Gedankenkarussell – Churning /Turning things / ideas over in my mind
I was curious how else “Kopfkino” is used, and how you can translate it. Found this example:
Which I think comes out to something like this:
I don’t like trying to translate it. I just like the mental image that “Kopfkino” has. It sort of explains itself, at least the “pictures in your head” part.
In this context, “how I pictured” is the perfect match. But me personally, I wouldn’t use “Kopfkino” like that. To me, it does have some aspect of drama or wild imagination, not just normal “picturing”. But that’s just my personal preference.
Hallo,
I’ve come across the Kopfkino but not the Gedankenkarussel, although it is, as you said, quite intuitive.
There’s no equivalent in English to Kopfkino, at least none I know of, I think we mostly express it as “thoughts running wild” or “imagining all sorts of scenarios”… We do have the “train of thought”, but that has a whole different meaning, I’m wondering if there’s a fixed German word for that…
All in all, I think German has done quite well in finding words for things we all experience, but for which other languages haven’t come up with one word that conveys the notion. I can think of Kummerspeck or Wegbier, for instance (not to mention Schadenfreude, which we actually imported into English).
Bis morgen!
“Kopfkino” doesn’t have a good equivalent, I don’t think. English might have cornered German in a dark alley and picked its pockets for this word, if the trio “pfk” wasn’t there as a bodyguard.
I found an English article about the same study. “Don’t worry if you’re a worrier…it could be good for you.” It’s catchy and captures the gist of the article. That’s probably the best you can do.
I think for Kopfkino haben when you’re in suspense, “having visions of ____” (some exaggerated, insane scenario) can at least sometimes work. Not very idiom-y, though.
Oh yeah, that sounds pretty kino-y.
I thought of “the film reel in your head,” but I think that’s mostly used for positive things like good memories. And it might not be that common.
I’ll bite: What is pfk? I found a bunch of camouflage shirts advertised with the heading pfk but it is a term new to me. I may well have missed a post in ydg.
Oh, I just meant “Kopfkino” can be hard for native English speakers to pronounce because of those three consonants in the middle.
Turns out “pfk” is exactly what it sounds like XD
PFK, ey? The only PFK we know ’round here is
I am dense today (and maybe others too); thank you!
