Are there different words for “this, that, these, those” in German? I know that diese means “this” in English.
Singular:
This- pointing to something that is nearby
That- pointing to something that is far away
Plural:
These- pointing to something that is nearby
Those- pointing to something that is far away
Does German have similar words or do you just use “diese” in the right case for the word “this” in English.
Thank you for any help you can give me!
I’ve only seen this comment now 2 years later, so I’m not sure you’ll ever read this, but it’s a great question so:
German has three options:
“diese” corresponds with “this” and “jene” is technically “that/those” BUT German tends to use the plain “der/die/das” MUCH more where English would use “this” or “that”.
In both cases, using “diese-” or “jene-” would sound SUPER stupid.
