One thing I am a bit unclear on is what you do you use “du” or “ihr” when you go into a shop or bar (where more than one person works), but you are just talking to one person at the specific moment (where the vibe is definitely du) but you are asking something about what the shop / bar has on offer.
Like my gut reaction would be to go for du “habt ihr xyz” because i am asking if the shop has it, not them personally.
I think this was because when i was in similar english speaking situations I’d have been “have you guys got”….
I mean actually “you guys” is kind considered sexist and one to avoid these days and “you lot” I’d use with friends but sounds probably way too informal for most situations when talking to people in a shop. Y’all sounds too U.S and “yous”, fine in informal setting, but it just isn’t the dialect of english i speak…….
But thats another topic we don’t need to get into……
But i saw a thread on reddit recently where people were saying tit would be wrong to go into a shop/ bar and say “habt ihr…” .
Do you have any thoughts on this?
Great question, I always use “ihr” for general questions and avoid “du” for direct requests, because I always found it arrogant and overbearing when I was working the bar and someone came and said “Machst du mir ein Bier.”
But that are just my personal triggers I think.
I REALLY wouldn’t know why someone would say “habt ihr Flat White” is wrong though. Must be Austrians being Austrians again :D
