Listening Comprehension Podcast
I think it’s episode two or three now, I don’t know.
Anyway, the topic this time is Ljubljana.
Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia, which is a country in Europe, which is a continent on Earth, which is a planet in the sol… okay seriously :)
Slovenia is right under Austria. It has a lot of mountains, but also a tiny fraction of the mediterranean coast. It used to belong to former Yugoslavia, but it was the first one to become independent and it had nothing to do with the war that went on in the Balkans a while back. The language belongs to the Slavic family, but they’re not using the Cyrillic alphabet and all in all, it didn’t feel very eastern European to me. There are a lot of Austrian influences, the supermarkets are pretty much German (Spar, Lidl, Hofer … which is Aldi in Germany) and half the stuff there has German labels, but the impression I got was neither German, nor Eastern European but instead…. well, you’ll hear it in the podcast.
It’s a pretty long one this time, and I am talking pretty fast. Sorry for that!!
So if you’re a beginner, it’s probably too much, but I have made a transcript including a line by line translation, so you at least have a chance to follow along.
I am also thinking about actually setting up a Podcast, so I can use a better player where you can skip back and forth with more ease. Or maybe even use time stamps or something, but I have made a lot of changes to the site behind the scenes and I need to finish that first.
Anyway… I have broken down the episode into a few segments. You can either listen to the full one or go segment by segment.

Hallo ihr lieben, und willkommen zu einer neuen Folge von meinem Hörverstehen-Podcast. Und das Thema diesmal ist: Ljubljana.
Hey everyone (nice way) and welcome to a new episode of my listening comprehension podcast. And the topic this time is: Ljubljana.
Ich hab äh die letzten 5 Monate mit Anji in Ljubljana gewohnt, und heute ähm will ich euch mal n bisschen erzählen, wie’s mir da so gefallen hat, und was meine Eindrücke von der Stadt sind. Also ähm, wie schon gesagt, wir sind Anfang November nach Ljubljana gezogen.
For the last 5 months, I lived in Ljubljana with Anji, and today I want to tell you a little, how I liked it and what my impressions are of the city. So… like I said, we moved to Ljubljana in the beginning of November.
Wir hatten ‘ne echt super super schöne Wohnung, im 11. Stock von ‘nem Hochhaus, fast im Zentrum von der Stadt.
We had a really really beautiful apartment (studio-style) in the 11th floor of a high rise, almost in the city center.
Und ähm, die Wohnung war super klein, aber super super schön eingerichtet, super toller Blick und für uns war einfach perfekt.
And the apartment was super tiny, but super super beautifully furnished/designed inside, great view and for us, it was just perfect.
Wir waren auch viel zu Hause und haben viel gearbeitet. Und wenn wir nicht zuhause waren, dann haben wir kleine Ausflüge gemacht. Entweder Tagesausflüge oder Ausflüge für mehrere Tage, denn Slowenien hat echt viel schöne Landschaft auf echt wenig Raum.
And we WERE at home a lot, and worked a lot. And if we weren’t at home, then we made little excursions. Either day trips or trips over several days, because Slovenia has a lot of beautiful nature in a very small space.
Also man fährt zwei Stunden, zwei drei Stunden mit dem Auto, dann ist man am Mittelmeer. Da gibt’s ‘ne kleine äh kleine, süße, italienisch aussehende Stadt Piran, die hat uns sehr gut gefallen.
Like… you drive for two hours, two to three hours by car and then you’re at the Mediterranean (the Adria to be precise). There’s a small, cute, italian looking town Piran, that we liked a lot.
Wenn man in die andere Richtung eine Stunde fährt, dann ist man im alpinen Hochgebirge, und dann gibt’s noch den Triglav-Nationalpark, das is’n ganz großer Nationalpark, auch alpines Gebirge. Es gibt ‘n (sorry,I messed up the cut here)
If you go in the other direction for an hour, then you’re in the Alpine mountains, and then, there’s also the Triglav national parc. That’s a really huge national parc, also apline mountains. There’s a
wunderschönen Fluss, den ähm… Soca-Fluß heißt der.
Die Quelle ist da in den… im Triglav-National-Park, und der Fluss hat unglaublich schönen grünes Wasser (green and clear is what I mean :)
Genau, aber die meiste Zeit waren wir tatsächlich in der Wohnung, und haben gearbeitet. Oder ‘n bisschen durch die Stadt spazieren.
gorgeous river, the.. erm… Soca river it is called. The source is there in the.. the Triglav national parc, and the river has incredibly beautiful green water.
Yeah, but the majority of the time we were actually at home and worked. Or going for a walk through the city for a bit.
Aber … nich so… ach so, und wir waren auch noch in Venedig, aber das war … hmpf… das war eigentlich nich so spannend.
But… not like… oh, and we were also in Venice, but that was… pff… that’s wasn’t all that exciting actually.
Wie auch immer….
Wie hat mir Ljubljana gefallen?
Wenn ich meine Eindrücke in drei Worten zusammenfasse, dann sind das:
Tischdecken, Rassehunde und Skandinavien
Anyway…
how did I like Ljubljana?
If I summarize my impressions with three words, they’ll be:
tableclothes, pedigree dogs and Scandinavia
Ja, das sind irgendwie komische Wörter, aber ich sag jetzt mal ‘n bisschen was dazu.
Yeah… it’s weird words, kind of, but I’m gonna say a bit about it.
Tischdecken weil, irgendwie jedes Restaurant, im Zentrum zumindest, hat Tischdecken auf dem Tisch. Und das ist für mich äh, der aus Berlin kommt, extrem ungewöhnlich, weil ‘ne Tischdecke auf’m Tisch ist ‘n Zeichen für mich, dass das Restaurant super super super fancy ist… *burps…und in Ljubljana haben eeeeecht viele Restaurants Tischdecken auf’m Tisch.
Tablecloths because, somehow every restaurant, in the center anyway, has tablecloths on the tables. And for me, coming from Berlin, that is extremely unusual, because a tablecloth on the table for me is a sign that the restaurant is super super super fancy … burps… and in Ljubljana a LOOOT of restaurants have tablecloths on the table.
Tischdecken, dann… die Servierte ist gefaltet und steht, das Weinglas steht da, das Besteck liegt schon da und das ist für mich ähm… ja, ich trau mich da nicht so wirklich rein, in diese Restaurants.
The tablecloths, the… the napkin is folded and stands, the wine glass is standing there, the silverware is lying there already, and for me, that is… well, I don’t really dare go in, into these restaurants.
Im Endeffekt sind die … sind die nichts besonderes, sind einfach ganz normale Restaurants mit normalem Essen für normale Preise, aber sehen unglaublich fancy aus, wenn man von aussen reinguckt, und das bin ich nicht gewohnt.
In the end, they’re… they’re nothing special, are just completely normal restaurants with normal food for normal prices, but they look incredibly fancy, if you look in from the outside. And I am not used to that.
Zweiter Punkt war äh Rassehunde
Second point was… erm… pedigree dogs.
ich hab noch nie in meinem Leben so viele Rassehunde gesehen. Wenn ihr nicht wisst, was Rassehunde sind… das sind Hunde, die.. die nicht, die nich’ gemischt sind sondern einfach zum Beispiel 100% Boxer oder 100% Dobermann.
Never in my life have I seen so many pedigree dogs. If you don’t know what pedigree dogs are… those are dogs that.. .that aren’t „mixed“ but just for example 100% boxer or 100% doberman.
Und ich hab in meinem Leben noch nie so viele Windhunde, und Windhu… Langfellwindhunde und was weiß ich nicht alles gesehen.
And I have never in my life seen so many greyhounds and greyh… „long hair greyhounds“ (I mean Afghan Greyhounds) and what do I know what else.
Ich kenn mich mit Hunden überhaupt nicht aus. Aber die Hunde, die ich in Ljubljana gesehen habe, sehen alle unwahrscheinlich teuer aus.
I don’t know anything about dogs. But the dogs I have seen in Ljubljana all look unbelievably expensive.
Ja…diese komischen japanischen Akika-Hunde oder so, die sind teuer. Und in Ljubljana laufen echt viele davon rum.
Und das passt auch direkt zum dritten Wort: Skandinavien.
Yeah… these strange japanese Akika dogs or something, they are EXPENSIVE. And in Ljubljana, there are many of them walking around.
And that fits the third word: Scandinavia
Das ging direkt los, als ich angekommen bin, und hat sich irgendwie nicht geändert: ich hatte die ganze Zeit immer mal wieder das Gefühl “Oh mein Gott, ich bin in Skandinavien.”
It started, right when I got there, and it somehow never changed: the whole time I kept having moments where I was feeling like “Oh my god, I am in Scandinavia.”
Ich weiß nicht, wie… wie viele von euch das wissen, aber man hat lange gesagt, Skandinavien ist so’n bisschen der feuchte Traum vom Deutschland.
I don’t know how many of you know this, but for a long time people would say that Scandinavia is somewhat Germany’s wet dream.
Also alles ist besser in Skandinavien. Alles sauberer, alles ist organisierter, alles ist ruhiger, die Leute sind freundlicher (I meant: höflicher). Und ähm in Slowenien… oder in Ljubljana besser gesagt, ist das so’n bisschen so. Es ist tatsächlich alles wahnsinnig gut organisiert, es ist sauber, es ist ruhig.
So everything is better in Scandinavia. Everything is cleaner, everything is organized better, everything is more calm, the people are more friendly (I meant: more polite). And in Slovenia… or let’s say in Ljubljana, it’s a bit like that. Everything IS actually really well organized, it is clean, it is quiet.
Man kann überall mit Karte zahlen. Man kann sogar bei Aldi mit Karte zahlen.. ähm das das äh kannste in Berlin vergessen. In Berlin kannste froh sein, wenn du überhaupt irgendwo mit Karte bezahlen kannst. In Slo… in Ljubljana kannst du überall mit Karte bezahlen.
You can pay with card everywhere. You can even pay with card at Aldi…. you can forget about that in Berlin. In Berlin, you’re lucky if you can pay with card anywhere at all. In Slo… in Ljubljana you can pay with card everywhere.
Die Stadt ist wahnsinnig grün, und es gibt … ja, Parks ist das falsche Wort, es gibt Wälder, die quasi bis direkt in die Stadt gehen. Das liegt natürlich auch daran, dass die Stadt nicht so groß ist.
Es sind nur 250.000 Einwohner, aber ähm… ja die Natur, ist quasi.. die geht bis ins Stadtzentrum.
The city is incredibly green and there are… well, parc is the wrong word, there are forests that basically reach right into the city. That’s of course partially because the city is not that big. It’s only 250.000 inhabitants, but yeah… the nature is basically … it goes right into the city center.
Und zum „organisiert“ nochmal ‘n paar Beispiele. Ähm… Kartenzahlung bei Aldi hatte ich schon gesagt,
And again a few examples for the „organized“-part. I already mentioned card payment at Aldi,
aber zum Beispiel die Kassierer bei Aldi sind schneller, als die Kassierer hier in Deutschland.
but for example the cashiers at Aldi are faster than the cashiers here in Germany.
Ich war echt lange bei Aldi einkaufen, und bin eigentlich super trainiert mit … mit dem einpacken.
Ich schaff in Deutschland immer alles in meine Tüten einzupacken (*while they’re scanning), egal, wie viel ich einkaufe. Und in Ljubljana … keine Chance. Die Leute sind so schnell, und so effizient.
For a long time, I used to shop at Aldi and I am super well trained with… with the packing up /bagging. In Germany, I always manage to bag everything (while they scan it, I mean) , no matter how much I buy. But in Ljubljana… no chance. The people are so fast, and so efficient.
Ääähm… die gucken zum Beispiel, was für einen Geldschein du im Portemonnaie hast, und sortieren schon das Wechselgeld raus, bevor du den Schein überhaupt rausgeholt hast, einfach damit’s ‘n paar Sekunden schneller geht.
They look for example, what bill you have in your wallet and they sort out the change even before you even took the bill out. Just so it’s a few seconds faster.
Oder ähm… während während meine Kartenzahlung noch lief… also ich hab meine Karte an diesen Kartenzahlungsleser gehalten, und während meine Kartenzahlung noch prozessiert wurde, hat die Kassiererin schon den nächsten Kunden bearbeitet und abkassiert – in bar. Das hab ich noch nie erlebt. Wir waren quasi beide gleichzeitig fertig.
Or … while my card payment was still going through… so I held my card against this card reader device and while my card payment was being processed, the cashier already took care of the next customer and cashed him in – in cash. I have never seen something like that. We both were basically done at the same time.
Ähm, ansonsten was noch… ja, Bus, Busse sind besser organisiert. Jeder äh jeder hat so ‘ne Plastikkarte und die hält man einfach an so ‘n Scanner und das ist dann … so bezahlt man für den Bus. Das heißt, es geht alles super schnell.
And apart from that what else… yeah, the bus, buses are organized better. Everyone has like a plastic card and you just hold it in front of a scanner and that then is… that is how you pay for the bus. That means, it’s super fast.
Und mit dieser Plastikkarte, kann man sich auch die City-Bikes ausleihen, die’s in Ljubljana gibt. Ähm, die kosten nix, es gibt relativ viele Stationen – Also die kosten nix, für ‘ne halbe Stunde – und kann man mit der gleichen Karte machen.
And with this plastic card you can also rent the city bikes that there are in Ljubljana. They’re free of charge, there are relatively many stations… well, they’re free of charge for half an hour – and you can do that with the same card.
Und ‘n letztes Beispiel, für äh wie, wie organisiert und sauber alles ist, in Slowenien:
wir hatten im letzten Monat über unserer Wohnung Bauarbeiten, und die Bauarbeiter haben im Hausflur, im Treppenhaus und im Fahrstuhl den Fußboden und den unteren Teil von den Wänden äh abgeklebt, mit.. mit so Decken, damit das nicht dreckig wird und damit da keine Kratzer reinkommen.
And one last example for how organized and clean everything is in Slovenia:
we had construction works above our apartment in the last month, and the construction workers masked the floor and the lower parts of the wall in the hallway and in the elevator with … like… with kind of blankets, so that it wouldn’t get dirty and so that there’s are no scratches (“lit.: going into it”).
Und das ist … das ist ‘ne Kleinigkeit. Das dauert nicht lange, das zu machen, aber irgendwie.. äh ja, ist das einfach ein Zeichen dafür, dass alles alles gut .. gut organisiert und effizient und… äh… ja… einfach skandinavisch… zumindest meine Vorstellung von Skandinavien ist so.
And that is… it’s not a big deal. It doesn’t take long to do that, but somehow… yeah.. it’s just a sign that everything is well organized and efficient and… well… just Scandinavian… at least my image of Scandinavia is like that.
Ähm… oh und die Bauarbeiten, die waren auch relativ auf den Tag genau fertig. Die haben gesagt, es dauert einen Monat und nach einem Monat waren sie dann auch weg.
Oh and the constructions, there were done pretty much on the precise day. They said it would take a month and after one month, they were gone.
Ja, jetzt die Frage, wie wie hat’s mir denn jetzt eigentlich gefallen?
Die Antwort ist: die Natur ist echt wunder- wunderschön.
Es ist super super toll, wenn du hinter deinem Haus direkt ‘n kleinen Berg hast mit Wald. Und und richtiger Wald also nicht…. nicht… irgendwie so Stadtwald sondern richtig wilder Wald.
Yeah… and now the question how I actually liked it?
The answer is: the nature is really really beautiful.
It is amazing, when you have a little mountain with forest behind your building. And REAL forest. So not … like some city forest but real wild forest.
Ähm, aber insgesamt war mir Ljubljana viel viel viel zu fancy. Also viel zu schick. Die Leute sind mir zu High Class gewesen und äh… irgendwie… mir haben Freak um mich rum gefehlt. Einfach ‘n bisschen.. ja, ‘n bisschen alternativere Atmosphäre.
But overall, Ljubljana was much much too fancy for me. Like… too classy. The people were too high class for me (on average, of course) and somehow… I was missing having freaks around me. Just a little… well, a little more alternative flair.
Also insgesamt … Es war schön, aber ich würd’ da nich hinziehen. Wenn ich jetzt allerdings ‘ne Familie mit Kindern wär’, dann wär’ das vielleicht was anderes.
So all in all… it was nice, but I wouldn’t want to move there (like, for life). If, however, I was a family with kids, that might be a different story.
Ja… ähm glaube in… Slowenien macht macht wirklich sehr viel Marketing. Also Slawenien hat… Slowenien hat tolle Natur, und äh weiß das aber auch, und macht viel Marketing, um seinen Tourismus zu pushen.
Yeah… I believe… Slovenia is really doing a lot of marketing. So, Slovenia has great nature and it knows it. And it is doing a lot of marketing to push its tourism (sector).
Und ich glaube, dass das in 5 – 10 Jahren da äh relativ teuer ist, das ganze Land. Also, sie wissen, was sie haben, und werden das auch verkaufen für.. für teures Geld, und das ist völlig in Ordnung so.
And I think that in five to ten years, it’ll be relatively expensive, the whole country. So… they know what they have and they’ll sell it for good money. Which is perfectly fine.
Gut! Ja, ich glaub, das war’s, was ich euch erzählen wollte. Ich könnt euch noch viel mehr erzählen, natürlich, aber ich glaub, das reicht jetzt erst mal für heute.
Great. I think that was what I wanted to tell you. I could tell you much more, of course, but I think this is enough for today.

Ah und eine Sachen wollte ich noch sagen… nee, eigentlich zwei Sachen.
Es gibt überall Craft-Bier. Es wird wahnsinnig viel gebraut in Slowenien, und ich hab nicht erwartet, dass es in so ‘ner kleinen Stadt mehr Craft-Bier gibt als in Berlin. Und die zweite Sache … ähm…
Oh and one more thing I wanted to tell you… no, two things, actually.
There’s craft beer everywhere. They brew a lot in Slovenia, and I didn’t expect that in such a small city, there will be more craft beer than in Berlin (relatively speaking, of course). And the second thing…
is ‘n bisschen komisch, das als letztes zu sagen, aber der Wein, den ich da getrunken hab, ist wirklich wirklich ekelhaft. Ich hab noch nie im meinem Leben so viel Wein ausgespuckt wie in Slowenien (sorry, Slovenia, but it’s true!!)
it’s a bit weird to say that as the last thing, but the wine I had there is really really disgusting. I have never in my life spat out so much wine as I did in Slovenia.
Ähm… ja… also, ich red’ spezifisch über Rotwein, und der Slowenische Rotwein, zumindest der aus dem Supermarkt… Finger weg!!!
Erm… yeah.. so, I talk specifically about red wine and the Slovenian red wine, the one from the supermarket at least… hands off!!!
Gut, ich glaub das reicht für heute. Ähm…

A couple or more random bits of info:
- Slovenians are incredibly sporty. At least, there are fitness parcours to be found all over the place
- if you’re there, try the beer Lasko… it’s the perfect hiking beer!!
