Hello everyone,

so this is technically just a little update about the site, but I wanted to make it a tiny little bit “German learning”-ish, so I have decided that rather than writing, I’ll just do a little…

Podcast.

Hooray :).

As usual, I did not use a script, so you’ll get to hear the full beauty of spoken German – with all the filler, the shortening, the on-the-fly rephrasing and the “weird” sentence structures (which you should NOT aspire to).
In general, I am a fairly slow and “clear” speaker, but I do have my fast moments in here, too. I tried to time-stretch it with Audacity (software) but it sounded so bad, that I have decided against putting it up.

Still, I know that almost half of you are beginners or A2 and a whole 5 minutes of German rambling is WAY too hard.
So I also did a transcript, complete with a segmented translation  AAAND… I cut the audio in short pieces accordingly, so you can really repeat a segment that you’re having trouble with over and over and over and over again, until you really hear me say, what I wrote in the transcript.
I used to do that with movie subtitles when I got really serious about my English and it was exhausting, but it was also really really helpful for sharpening the ear.

So yeah… I hope you like it and I also hope you like the new layout (It’s just a first draft, anyway. I’ll keep making modifications for more better-ness)

nach langer langer Zeit mache ich mal wieder einen kleinen Minipodcast. Und heute geht’s um ein Update auf der Seite, denn ich hab’ endlich mal mein Layout geändert.

Hi everyone,
after a long long time, I’ll do a little mini podcast. And today, it’ll be about an update on the page, because I have finally changed my layout.

Wenn ihr regelmäßig lest, dann denkt ihr jetzt vielleicht: ”Hmm, naja…äh, du änderst doch das Layout ständig.”
Und das stimmt. Ich arbeite fast jede Woche am Layout und mache kleine Änderungen hier und kleine Änderungen da.

If you’re reading [my site] regularly, then you’re maybe thinking: ”Hmm, well.. uhm… you’re actually changing the layout all the time.”
And that’s true. I work on the layout almost every week and I make small changes here and small changes there.

Aber die Änderung, die ich jetzt gemacht, ist relativ ”in the face”, denn ich hab’ den oberen Bereich der Seite geändert.
Und hier muss ich sagen, ganz wichtig, das gilt nur für Desktop und Laptop. Also auf dem Handy sieht die Seite aus wie immer.

But the change I made now is relatively ”in the face”, because I changed the upper part of the page.
And here I have to say, very important, that only goes for desktop and laptop. So on the phone, the page looks like always.

Aber auf Desktop und Laptop äh sieht die Seite anders aus.
Und zwar ist es jetzt oben nur noch ein relativ… äh relative schmaler Streifen, wo ihr das Menü findet und mein äh neues … ja, Logo kann man nicht sagen, aber mein, meine Schrift.

But on desktop and laptop, the site looks different.
Specifically, there is only a relative… relatively small strip at the top, where you can find the menu and my new… uh.. well, you can’t really say logo, but my, my new font.

Und ein, ein.. äh Login-Button, und auch wenn ihr eingeloggt seid, einen Logout-Button, und einen Button, wo ihr zu eurem Profil kommt.
Und ganz ganz wichtig – die Suche ist wieder da. Und die Suchfunktion ist auch irgendwie der Grund, WARUM ich mein Design geändert hab’.
Denn das ist mir gar nicht so leicht gefallen.

And a login button, and also if you’re logged in a logout button and a bottun that takes you to your profile.
And very very important, the search is back. And the search function is kind of also the reason why I changed my design. Because doing that actually wasn’t easy for me.

Der obere Bereich der Seite war schon lange lange lange lange so, wie er, wie er eben war, und ich hab immer mal gedacht: ” Hmm, ja, ich könnt’ das ja mal ändern.” Aber dann hab’ ich mich dagegen entschieden, weil das irgendwie… war das für mich so der Charakter von der Seite.

The upper section of the page has been the way it has been for a long long long long time. And I thought from time to time ” Hmm, I could maybe change that some time.”
But then I decided against, because somehow… to me that was the character of the page.

Aber jetzt habe ich mich entschieden, das doch zu ändern, und der Grund ist vor allem, damit mehr Platz auf dem Bildschirm ist.
Der obere Bereich, so wie er vorher war, hat ein bisschen Platz verschwendet, und man musste, man musste mehr scrollen. Und jetzt muss man weniger scrollen.

But now I have decided to change it after all. And the reason is primarily so that there’s more room on the screen.
The upper part, the way it was before, did waste a bit of space and you had to scroll more. And now you have to scroll less.

Und warum das wichtig ist, ist wegen meinem Wörterbuch.
Das Wörterbuch ist unter dem Punkt ”Dictionary” und ich arbeite da im Moment echt viel dran, also ich mach neue Einträge, und verknüpf’ Einträge mit’nander, so wie die verwand sind, und ich mach Audio, und irgendwann kommen dann auch Beispiele.

And the reason why that’s important is because of my dictionary.
The dictionary can be found under the menu item ”Dictionary” and I’m working on that a lot at the moment. So I’m creating new entries and I am connecting entries, as they’re related. And I’m doing audio and at some point, there will also be examples.

Und die Idee ist, dass ihr in diesem Wörterbuch schnell und entspannt Sachen nachgucken könnt, wo ihr auch ‘n bisschen so… ja… Infos bekommt, wie man das benutzt, und was die eigentliche Bedeutung von ‘nem Wort ist.

And the idea is that you can check things quickly and smoothly in this dictionary, where you’ll also get, well, information about how to use it [the words] and what the actual meaning of the word is.

Und äh… ja… die Idee ist, dass alle Einträge auf… in diesem Wörterbuch jeweils auf eine Bildschirmseite passen. Also, dass ihr nich’ jedesmal, wenn ihr auf’n neues Wort klickt, dass ihr dann scrollen müsst, um eigentlich das zu lesen, was interessant ist.

And… well.. yeah, the idea is that all entries in that dictionary each fit on one screen. So that when you click on a new word you don’t have to scroll all the time to read what’s actually interesting.

Und bei dem Layout, wie es vorher war, da musste man bei jedem Eintrag erst mal runterscrollen, um dann die Beispiele zu sehen, oder die Verwandten zu sehen, und so weiter.
Und äh jetzt mit dem kleineren oberen Bereich passt fast immer der komplette Eintrag auf den Bildschirm, und ihr könnt einfach entspannt hin- und herklicken.

And with the layout as it was before, for each entry you had to first scroll down to see the example or see the relatives and so on. And now, with the smaller upper section, the complete entry fits on one screen and you can smoothly click to and fro.

Auf’m Handy geht das natürlich nicht. Der Handybildschirm ist viel zu klein, um alles anzuzeigen. Da muss man ‘n bisschen hin- und herscrollen. Aber da ist das auch irgendwie was anderes.

Of course, that doesn’t work on the display of a phone. A mobile screen is WAY to small to display everything. There, you’ll have to scroll a bit. But that’s kind of a different thing there anyway.

Ja, äh, das ist mein großes, großes Design-Update. Eigentlich wollt’ ich noch’n zweites Update machen. Und zwar eine neue Funktion, die viele von euch glaub’ ich echt relative cool finden.
Aber da gab’s äh kleine Software-Probleme mit der Software, wie ich dafür gekauft hab’.

Yeah, uhm, that is my big big design update. Originally, I wanted to do a second update. Specifically, a new functionality, that many of you will probably really like.
But there were some small software issues with the software that I bought for it.

Und der Software-Entwickler, der ist letzte Woche Vater geworden und hat jetzt im Moment keine, keine Zeit oder keine Nerven, sich, sich um diese Probleme zu kümmern.
Und versteh das auch vollkommen, aber deshalb dauert das alles noch ‘n bisschen länger.

And the software developper, he became a dad last week and at the moment he has no time or not nerves to take care of these problems. And I completely get that, but that’s why everything takes a little longer.

Ihr seid bestimmt super neugierig, was es ist.
Aber ich sag’s euch nich’. Das seht ihr dann, wenn’s fertig ist.

You’re probably super curious as to what it is. But I will not tell you. You’ll see it when it’s finished.

Ja… äh, wenn ihr Fragen habt, zum neuen Layout, dann sagt mir mal Bescheid.
Der Schalter für Night-Mode, der ist jetzt unten links in der Ecke. Und oh, und was schon ‘n bisschen länger da ist, ist dieser Kommentarbutton unten links in der Ecke.

Yeah, well… if you have questions about the new layout, then let me know. The switch for night mode now sits in the bottom left corner. And oh, what’s been there for a bit already is this comment button in the bottom left corner.

Wenn ihr den klickt, dann kriegt ihr ein Kommentarfeld, und ihr könnt anfangen, ‘n Kommentar zu schreiben. Und dann könnt ihr wieder raufklicken, und das Feld geht wieder weg.
Aber das, was ihr geschrieben habt, ist noch da.

When you click it, you’ll get a comment field and you can begin to write a comment and then you can click it again, and the field will go away, but what you’ve written will still be there.

Also, ihr könnt den Artikel lesen, und wenn euch irgendwie im Artikel was einfällt, dann könnt ihr anfangen einen Kommentar zu schreiben und dann macht ihr das Kommentarfeld wieder zu und lest weiter, und dann könnt ihr später weiterschreiben, und dann müsst nicht immer hin- und herscrollen.

So you can read the article, and if at some point in the article something comes to your mind you can start writing a comment, and then you close the comment field and keep reading and you can continue writing [the comment] later, and you don’t have to scroll up and down all the time.

Also, der Kommentar ist nicht verloren, wenn ihr äh, wenn ihr das Feld wieder zumacht. Der Kommentar, den ihr geschrieben habt, ist erst weg, wenn ihr die Seite neu ladet.

So the comment is not lost, if you close the field again. The comment you wrote will only really be gone, if you reload the page.

Aber ja.. das war mein kleines Technik-Update. Sagt mir in den, in den Kommentaren, wie euch das gefällt, und ob das ungewohnt ist.
Und ansonsten sehen wir uns, äh, oder lesen wir uns bald mit ‘nem neuen Artikel wieder.
