Hello, there is this form before nouns i can’t quite understand what it means, ex: Das Gleichgewicht wird zum Verlust. I know it means the balance ist lost but what exactly is the usage here?

I started German at age 14 in school. Our first teacher was a Spanish teacher who just kept one lesson ahead of us. The second year we got a “real” (English) German teacher. She was horrified – we basically had to get GCE “O”level in one year. Then on to “ A” level, where we had to read texts like “Minna von Barnhelm”, where the characters were so polite, they would speak to each other in the third person – e.g. “möchte sie ein Glas Wein?“ This was super confusing – what with all the other words for “you”. The text that saved me was “Kleider machen Leute”. Although it was in Gothic script, it was a charming story that taught me the structure of the language. The downside was/is, I probably sound pretty archaic – in Ermangelung irgendeiner Berichtigung!

I’ve never studied German, but learnt a lot through classical singing. Unfortunately that’s not exactly conversational (!), and now my daughter and family live near Zurich. Recently widowed, I’m free now to travel more, and am trying to improve my vocabulary and listening speed as my grandchildren chat.
Your weekly emails have cheered me up such a lot since I joined you, and I love the way you present the information. I love Checker Tobi too, but it’s still rather fast….

I was fortunate enough to have been able to live in Germany, (Landsberg am Lech) for eleven years. I left to return to Seattle in 1987 to take care of my elderly parents. Although I’ve tried to keep up with my German I’ve gotten rusty and hopefully this will help me get back what I’ve lost!

So, I’m enrolled on an intensive German course in Berlin at the end of June 2022. Which gives me three months to learn all the German I’ve forgotten – so that I don’t spend a fortnight in Germany just getting back to square one!

My high school German teacher, Sylvia Jones, was an inspiration in life as well as in the use of language. Her inspiration led to further language studies and a degree in linguistics. So happy here to rekindle my love for German, a language that informed me about my native American English structure, evolution, and usage, and in turn fostered a fascination with the facility of language itself.

Guten Tag,
I had a very good German teacher in high school who had us reading real German, literature by the 4th year. But at a very good university my German teacher was not very helpful, and fairly boring.
I was able to live and work for 9 months in what was then West Berlin right after my junior year in college. The work was in the officer’s mess of the British Army, near the famous Olympic stadium. We only went to East Germany once, shortly before we came back to the U.S.
Many years later, now, I’m trying to brush up on my now rusty German!
