“Fit and Miss”
***
Hi ihr alle,
Advent Calender 24, day number 23.
And today, we’ll get active for a last time this year and play a fun little round of
Find the Misfit
This is a quiz format where you’ll have to find the misfit within a group of words.
Like:
- apple
- peach
- onion
- car
Here, the misfit be onion, because garlic is a color while the other 4 options are all vegetables.
“Uh… what?!”
I’m just messing around :).
So yeah, you’ll have to find the misfit out of a bunch of words, and while usually, these types of quizzes focus on “meaning”, we will focus on GRAMMAR!
So do NOT get hung up on what the words mean, focus on grammar stuff like forms, plurals and so on.
I tried to make it so there’s really only one possible answer for each question. But it’s very well possible that you find some other solution than the one I saw. As long as your solution makes sense, it’s valid. You won’t get a point though, of course. Life ain’t fair :9
Anyway, I’ve also added a hint for each question, should you need one. And I have added a quick explainer about each answer so you know my logic.
And now… viel Spaß!!
Let me know how you did in the comments, and also, if you found some alternative solution for a question. Like I said… it’s totally possible. I just have a limited perspective after all :).
I hope you enjoyed this, have an amazing day, and I’ll see you tomorrow!

In no. 2 I thought , misfit was angehen,, because it means to concern s.o. Other three refer to physical activity like coming in, coming out and going around something.
In no. 3, I thought, misfit is rennen, because it refers to activity on ground or on same level, while fliegen and springen are in air, and schwimmen is in water. ( sorry, I did not think from Grammer point of view.)
In no. 5, I thought misfit is wind, because wind is unseen or untouchable, not visible, while other three are visible as mass. sorry again, that I missed grammer point of view.
Thanks a lot for learning that such Language learning quiz will have grammer consideration underneath.
I am ready for more interesting quizes.
I’ll definitely do a winter quiz special again this year, like last year. But maybe in February this time :)
Great fun and intriguing. Bit out of my grammar league!
60% correct – I had totallyforgotten about separable and inseparable prefixes. I wasn’t thinking about stem changes, either.
80% with two right answers for totally unrelated reasons. Aber wie immer, habe ich spaß gemacht!
*”Ich hatte Spaß” oder “Es hat Spaß gemacht”. Nicht vermischen :)
Thank you for all the effort put into these posts and in this website! Thank you to all the donators as well! Frohe Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch
Hello Emanuel ! Many thanks for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity to learn Deutsch through your scholarship program for the next one year.
A huge shoutout to the patron team for supporting such a great initiative to help other learners.
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year !!
Oh wow – very tricky but learned a thing or 2. Thx.
This is the first quiz where I’ve missed only one the first time! Woo hooo!!!!
Auf jeden fall ein schwieriges Quiz für mich, also hier sind meine alternativen Antworten:
Frage 2 – ein
Das Präfix EIN ist ein Artikel
Die Präfixe um, an, und auf sind alles Präpositionen
Frage 3 – fliegen
Stammänderung im Präteritum für fliegen ist: ie -> o
Für die anderen ist es: e oder i -> a
Thought DAS Wasser as opposed to the uncountable aspect. Aber nö biggie.
Auf jeden Fall – Schöne Feiertage aus Erfurt!
Thüringen: not only the “worst”, it’s also quite nice.
You meant “Wurst”, right?
I love doing quizzes;) vielen Danke!
‘Twas fun!
Well… I got the first one right, the next three right but for the wrong reasons, and the last one wrong. Supertoll! :D
I was a little bit confused by the first question because I forgot that ”Sein”, besides being a verb, is also a possessive pronoun But I chose ”fein” anyway because it’s clearly an adjective. And personally, the second question is definitely the hardest, because I’m not familiar with the other three verbs beside ”umgehen”. Like someone in the comment section, I noticed that ”Wasser” has a different gender, compared to the other options, so I chose it and I was wrong. Thanks for the quiz and frohe Weihnachten.
I chose “Wasser” for that reason, too.
Makes total sense as an answer, so it’s correct too. I changed “Wasser” to “der Schnee” now to make it less ambiguous.
According to my dictionary ‘Schnee’ has no plural, but the other three nouns do.
My bad, I didn’t think of “sein” being a verb. I now change it to “meine, seine, feine, …” so it’s clear.
It’s tricky with these questions to have really only ONE aspect that the words share or don’t share.
Same for “das Wasser”. I changed it to “der Schnee” now.
I considered the umGEHen, UMgehen thing but i didn’t pick it because i thought it was a bit “technical” as a difference so i went with what i thought was the only one that didn’t deal with physical motion … But I was wrong there too.
I sucked immensely, but that was fun info!!
Ich war schrecklich. :D aber ich mag die Themen.
Frage # 5 Alle Nomen sind maskulin außer Wasser.
Yup, I didn’t notice that. I changed “Wasser” to “Schnee” now.
Got the last question wrong without clicking hint and thinking article:
das Wasser
der Sand
der Wind
der Berg
Makes perfect sense.
I changed Wasser to Schnee now.
Isn’t sein a verb infinitive?
3/5
need work I suppose
Actually, question 1 and 5 were ambiguous and had more than one answer that makes sense. I didn’t notice these alternative answers when I made the quiz. So maybe your answers all made sense and you’d 5/5 if not for “the system”.
