Hello! We just got an email at work:
My question is about “welches” because i’d have thought it would be “welche” because at first glance it seemed like we are dealing with a plural.
Or is welches kind of a generic term that covers singular and plural?
Could you explain what’s going on grammatically here please?
You’re correct, technically “welche” would be right. The person just got “stuck” with “Besteck” as the last entity, and rolled with it, probably because they were writing without too much attention.
“welches” is a singular that can refer to a mass noun, but not to “die Teller”.
So you’re in “Gastro”, huh?
ah, ok, thanks, well, that’s good… i spotted a mistake then…
in answer to your question actually no, the place I work at has around 250-300 people and there is a “cafe” on the ground floor. People often just take their lunch up to their own departments and don’t bring Besteck etc back. I did however work in kitchens in my late teens and early twenties – mainly as a “KP” aka a kitchen porter (dishwasher, cleaning, basic food prep) I did a bit of front of house as well, but not much, felt much more at home behind the scenes..
In its use as pronoun for an undefined amount of things / people it needs a particular use right?
Its not as straightforward as viele or einige – or do people use it more or less interchangably with these words colloquially
This use of welche is a bit off – right ?
“Hier kommen zwei Ordnungsämter, und in 5 minuten kommen noch welche”
The use of “welche” is perfect, but the use of “Ordnungsämter” is wrong. The Ordnungsamt is the institution. You’d say “Leute vom Ordnungsamt” but then “noch welche” is perfect.
“viele” and “einige” have an implicit of amount. Not a precise amount of course, but “welche” is just one level more generic.
– Hast du noch Pappteller?
– Ja, ich glaube ich habe noch welche.
Unless you want to SPECIFICALLY say “einige” or “viele”, you’d go with “welche”.
Perfect?!
wow, i think i need a certificate so i can remember this moment!
But of course, it couldn’t be entirely perfect
; )
Good to know “Ämter” isn’t teh word for the people who work at the Amt.
Out of curiosity does “Beamte” work ok in this context instead ?
“Zwei Beamte vom Ordnungsamt” would work, but I doubt that people working at the Ordnungsamt are actually “verbeamtet”. At least not in Berlin, we ain’t got no money for this.
