Advent Calendar 2019 - Patience

A quick look at "die Geduld" - the German word for "patience".

Word Family

Root: *tele-

The core idea of the root was:

bearing, carrying

It’s the origin of the words tolerate, which has an element of bearing, as well as to extol and probably also toll.
The original idea of extol was probably a general raising, lifting which then shifted toward a more figurative sense.
