(In German, this actually ONLY works in the context of college and university. So it sounds much more academic than in English. You wouldn't use it for "learning German" for example, unless you get a degree.)
2.
to do highly concentrated reading
(You can "studieren" documents for example. Sounds a bit dry, though. )
