Could u explain the meaning of “die Ader” please ?
google translate is showing me different meanings, and I cannot find a common theme between them.
The core theme here is a long, tube-like winding thing, often in a context of transporting something.
The main meaning is “blood vessel”, but it is also used for plants, water streams and character streaks.
There’s no deep logic why this word is used for a character streak, but the English word “trait” comes from the core of “pulling”.
Oh and there’s Goldader, which is a thin vein of gold that runs through a rock.
Let me know if that helps.
I usually avoid replying just to thank ppl, but yea that was really helpful.
Something that is actually interesting is that in my native language, Arabic, the word for “Ader” which is “عرق” can be used in pretty much all the contexts u listed even for character streaks!, (at least in the spoken Arabic in my region). They are pretty much synonyms in my opinion.
That’s an interesting connection! Maybe European languages imported some of these idiomatic uses from Arabic along with the sciences.
These parallels between unrelated languages are always fascinating…
