Word Family

Root: *pent-

The original idea of the family was:

treading, path

In the Germanic languages, it slowly shifted from the notion of going somewhere to the sense of searching and finding and the original sense was forgotten.

We can still see some of it in the Italian word “ponte” (brigde) . This is the origin of Pontifex (“bridge builder”) and pontificate, but the main member of the family is definitely to find.
