Do you think “we are lost for words” would be a possible translation for “wir können uns kaum fassen” ?

Or is something like “we can barely compose ourselves” better? Because composing oneself expresses is like “holding oneself together” but it also subtly suggests expression – e.g. a writer can compose a poem.

Like, keeping ones composure has the idea of keeping oneself under control although one is feeling strong emotion….

Deep L suggests :

we can hardly contain ourselves

which seems to express the idea the people came very close to saying something they didn’t want to.

e.g. they were so excited / overjoyed / angry / surprised they nearly said something did something they didn’t want to … Kind of the opposite of being lsot for words.

Also a vote for an article on this word. I’ve been dealing with it a lot recently, along with the prefix forms of greifen. It seems there are many different ways to express the authorities taking someone into custody.

Also packen would be an interesting one. I think i might have mentioned that before.

btw, thanks for recommending dwds, i’m starting to use it a lot more…

Actually am thinking “we can barely compose ourselves” might be weird sounding english

yeah, I know, its my first language…..

Better would be “we can barely keep our composure”.

hi Emanuel, not sure if you missed this one. I’d be curious whether you think…particularly if you think “we can hardly contain ourselves” works in spite of the contradictions I mention above?

And when you do it, which will be wonderful, perhaps compare greifen?

I wonder if “fassen” and friends would make for a good in depth article. And what does it have to do with barrels?

Sorry to bother you, and thanks for your help.
