My favorite source for the origin of English words.
Just as I thought I had the preposition ‘an’ with Ort sorted out, I learn that one can also use ‘in’. Still struggling on the difference between the two.
I think “in” is only used for “Ort” in the sense of “village/city”.
– In diesem Ort namens Kleindorf wohnen 1000 Menschen.
– Innerhalb des Ortes darf man nur 30 fahren.
is there any difference between the nouns Ort and Örtlichkeit?
“der Ort” is much broader, “Örtlichkeit” is a weird one to capture. I’d say it has a certain sense of “venue” to it.
Just double checking it would be weird to use this for anything else other than a physical place in a environment.
Like it couldn’t be substituted for “stelle” e.g using it to talk about a place on the body where there is pain or a place in a film where something happens?
Likewise it would also would be weird to use it about where to put an object while tidying e.g „die Bücher kommen in diesen Ort (im Regal)hin „
Great question!
You’re correct, Ort only works for actual locations where you can be, and maybe also places where you can put something.
So it may work in the context of tidying, though “Stelle” is definitely better.
But Ort would be completely out of place for a “place in time” or “spot on the body”.
Cool thanks for the answer!
Good thing you followed up on that. I did not see this comment in my feed for some reason.
I have a suggestion actually related to keeping track of comments . It would be really cool if site users could see a list of their previous comments. This isn’t really about “keeping track“ of replies but that its interesting to return to words or themes ive engaged with previously… not sure how difficult that would be to impliment…
