anlaufen

(an verb)

Meanings

1.
to start
(ONLY for movies starting in the cinema, and also for industrial production starting and ramping up. Outside of these context, the word wouldn't make sense as "to start".)
2.
to go to
(ONLY for ships that "target" a certain harbor. "laufen" is generally used with ships and harbors so this word is consistent, though not 100 precent logical.)
3.
to take on color
(Think of metal tarnishing or a face blushing.)
4.
to take a run-up
(In sports, taking up speed before jumping, for example. "Anlauf nehmen" is more idiomatic.)
