Word of the Day - "hauen"

Word Family

Root: *kau-

The core idea of this root was:

hewing, striking

It’s the origin of hew and hay (“hewn” gras) and at least according to the German etymological source that I am using, it is also the origin of the Latin branch of codex with words like code and codify.
The original idea of this branch was “hewn piece of wood” which was used to note laws and rules.
