This is a West-Germanic root and connections beyond the Germanic branch of the Indo-European tree are not known. It’s the origin of English to leap.
Your webpage-dictionary-helpline-sorter>outer is my No1 place to go for German queries. But can you recommend the 2nd most reliable place/dictionary to search in for words, such as anlaufen that are not included in this site – for good reasons. :)
thanks.
I’m usually using dict.cc because it is the most comprehensive, but it’s arguably not the best for learners because it’s really just meanings without commentary and order.
For learners, either Pons or Langenscheid or a good place, as they try to group meanings and give examples. I think they’re crowdsourced though, so sometimes an entry might mention 4 distinct meaning for a word that in reality are kind of the same thing. So yeah.. Pons has a bit of bloat, but I think it’s helpful.
Oh and I definitely do need to add the various versions of “laufen”. I want all prefix versions of the common base verbs covered. Thanks for the reminder :)
