Doesn’t ‘gegenüber’ also have another meaning, ‘in respect to’/’with regard to’?

Just realised this is conveyed in the example translated as ‘toward’. I missed that first time — perhaps because ‘toward’ is not so clearly metaphorical at first glimpse in English.
