Meanings

1.
to make happy
(only for a momentary situation where a thing or fact makes a person happy. For for long term joy bringers. You'd use "froh machen" or "glücklich machen" for that.)
2.
to be glad, to be happy about, to be excited
("sich über jemanden/etwas freuen"with "über" the idea is that you're happy about something that is present or reality.)
3.
to look forward to, to be excited
("sich auf etwas freuen " ; with "auf" it's about being happy in anticipation of something)
