davor

Based on: da, vor
Adverb
  1. before that
  2. in front of that
  3. "facing that"
1.

before that

Opposite: danach
(In a temporal sense and for verbs that take "von" as a preposition. Emphasis is on vor, but can also be on da if you need a pointy quality. )
2.

in front of that

Opposite: dahinter
(In a local sense. This meaning can also be a prefix.)
Examples
  • "Ich bin jetzt am Kühlschrank.""Stehst du davor?""Ja.""Dann guck jetzt nach unten. Du müsstest von da deinen Bauch sehen.""Haha, sehr lustig. Jetzt sag mir wo die verdammten Chips sind."
  • "I'm at the fridge now.""Are you standing in front of it?""Yes.""Then look down now. You should see your belly from there.""Haha, very funny. Now tell me where the damn chips are!"
3.

"facing that"

Opposite: wovor
(For verbs that use "vor" as a preposition, like "Angst haben vor". No direct mapping to English prepositions, but there often is a sense of "in the face of".)
Examples
  • Ich habe Angst davor, im Dunkeln alleine nach Hause zu gehen.
  • I am afraid of going home alone in the dark.

I want to understand a little the difference between davor and vorher (I understand that zuvor is kinda like vorher but a bit more formal).Let s take one of your examples:

– Ich muss zur Arbeit gehen, aber vorher muss ich meine Brille finden.

Wouldn’t davor here mean something like ,,vor das”, like ,,vor dem Arbeitengehen”? If so, couldn’t I just replace vorher with davor?
