My favorite source for the origin of English words.
was thinking about this based on the current article https://yourdailygerman.com/modal-verbs-without-verb-german/
and I just wanted to check how its used.
Like if someone at work discovered someone else has eaten their biscuits or something, but we don’t know who did it, but I want to deny responsibility it would just be like saying “it wasn’t me”.
?
In that context, you’d just say “Ich war es nicht.”
“Ich kann nichts dafür.” would sound like it’s not your fault that someone took them or removed them.
So nichts daür would be better if like it was about not being able to stop someone taking it. Like, you tried to stop them but they ignored you like “i couldn’t do anything about it”
Don’t get too hung up on the stopping.
Maybe let’s take this dialogue:
– Warum sind die Kekse immer schon mittags alle? Die sollen bis abends reichen.
– Ich kann nichts dafür, wenn alle sich mehr nehmen, als sie sollen.
This doesn’t imply necessarily that you are trying to stop people.
