My favorite source for the origin of English words.

I read “Ich hätte gern eine Auskunft” as an example for Auskunft.
“eine” here is not referring to a single piece of information right?
DeepL suggests
I would like some information.
DWDs suggests :
Mitteilung aufgrund einer Anfrage
So if i said “kannst du mir eine Auskunft” über Stormveil Castle geben?” this could be kind of an overview of the castle; where to get in, the kind of enemies there, where to find NPCs, overall strategy etc.
You’ll notice i used “über” there. This was a guess. Is this the right preposition please?
Also “Ich hätte gern eine Auskunft” just somehow seems a bit weird to me. I suspect that is that it just sounds kinda odd from a english speakers point of view, but i wanted to check what you thought…
No, not really. “eine Auskunft” is kind of a formal way of saying “an answer to an inquery”.
It’s NOT simply “one piece of information”.
It also depends on the phrasing, what’s idiomatic:
– Ich hätte gerne EINE Auskunft.
– Kannst du mir Auskunft geben über… (NO article)
For your example, you could say “Ich hätte gerne eine Auskunft darüber, wieviele NPCs in der Burg sind.” but that sounds VERY formal.
Maybe try thinking of “Auskunft” as “disclosure”, rather than piece of information. It sits somewhere between those two.
ok, cool. I have a feeling this is one of those words that is going to remain in my passive vocabularly ..
