Hi! I didn’t actually search for this term, but it was in my Daily German RSS feed and I was curious to see what you said about 2025 (I thought you might talk about whether Germans say zweitausendfünfundzwanzig or zwanzig fünfundzwanzig, for example).
Ha, we say it both ways :).
I am tracking failed searches to get an idea which words to add and 2025 was searched for like dozens of times, so I added an entry for it. And that then showed up in your feed because it was new content basically.
Interesting! I don’t know why anyone is searching for that (other than the question I mentioned), but I hope you find some more insight into this.
By the way, would you say the two pronunciations are evenly split, or do most people tend to say one or the other? I’ve not been in Germany much since the mid-2000s, when it wasn’t an issue, and I’ve not consumed much German-language media since then, either. Just curious.
Thanks!
I’d say in spoken German Zwanzig Fünfundzwanzig is a bit more common because it’s shorter and sounds cooler. But the other option doesn’t sound super formal either, so people do use it.
This was a great question, by the way. Now the entry has legit value :)
That’s great to hear! I’d not commented before (honestly, I hadn’t even noticed the comments), but this was a nice interaction. Thanks for your work, and I’ll try to occasionally comment again in the future.
Yeah, whenever you have a question about a word, you can find me here pretty much :)
