verdauen
Verdauen means to digest“. Dauen by itself is not a verb (anymore) but it’s related to tauen (melt, thaw) and dew, and they all come from a root that meant something like to disolve. Which is what happens in our tummy. The food gets “melted away”… well, kind of.
Just like to digest, verdauen is also used for mental “servings”. In that sense it is similar to verarbeiten but it’s smaller in scale.
die Verdauung – the digestion
leicht verdaulich – easily digestible
die Verdauungsbeschwerden – indigestion (lit.: digestion difficulties)
- Ich kann jetzt nicht arbeiten, ich verdaue grade.
- I can’t work now, I’m digesting.
- Das mit dem Projekt muss ich erstmal verdauen.
- I’m gonna need some time to digest that thing with the project.

It appears to me that dauen is related to kauen to chew, masticate. zerkauen, to chew to pieces. kauen is related to kuh : cow, the animal which makes a production out of the grinding of grass.
Would make sense but the etymological sources give different roots for “dauen” and “kauen”, the former originally being about melting, the latter about chewing.
You comment made me think about “cow” and now the word will forever sound funny because it sounds exactly like German “kauen”… like the animal is called ” I chew”

Yes, that’s the one. But I also use Dwds.de to double check. For English I use Etymonline.com which is awesome (looks much better than dwds). I’m sure there must be a book of that kind for English though.
Gibt es denn eine verbindung zwischen “tauen ” und “dauer” ? Vielleicht gemessen wir Zeitdauern mit tauendem Schnee!
Das wäre eine interessante Methode, aber dafür haben wir hier zuwenig Schnee :). “dauern” ist mit “durate” verwandt.
