I've had ENOUGH :)!
The tool is still not where I wanted it to be. Specifically, I decided to not do Anki Card export for now, because it was just too glitchy and wonky.

But I want to start the testing phase finally, so today, I'll give you the guide on how to "install" YourDailyGerman in your ChatGPT.
|
What is it exactly
The whole thing is called ChatGPT App so it's not some crazy hack I cooked up. There are several very known names having "Apps" in the "App store" of ChatGPT, like Booking.com for example.

But the AI stuff moves so fast and changes everyday that I think most of you haven't heard about it. Also, OpenAI is kind of quiet about it, at least for now.

The cool thing about it is that once you install it, it is installed on your ChatGPT ACCOUNT, so you will always have it, no matter whether you use Chatty on your phone or desktop. It lives in your account, not on your device.

Anyway... I think it does have some potential, but let's find out together.
|
How to install the YDG App in ChatGPT
This is a fairly simple process, but there are a couple of crucial things. I'll walk you through it with screenshots.
|
Step A- Go to Settings
Click on your user-icon to get to your ChatGPT settings. On Desktop, it's in the bottom left, on mobile, you can get to it by opening the menu on the top.

Clicking 1 will open the menu, then, click 2 to get to settings.
|
Step B - Go to Apps
Next, navigate to "Apps" by clicking 3.
It'll open a new center and there, you have to click "create app" (4) to open the dialogue.

My App is not officially in the ChatGPT App store (yet), so you cannot find it via "explore apps" but if you're bored, you can look around there. I think Quizlet does have a flashcard app, so if you're using quizlet, this could be interesting for you.

Step C - Filling in the Form
|
You'll now see an empty form that we'll fill to "create" the app.

The name and description can be modified but I'll give you my version to copy paste:

Looks up words in the YourDailyGerman dictionary.
|
Slot 7: It should be on Server URL already. Leave it there or put it there if it isn't.

This is the crucial one. A mistake here will mean the thing won't work.

Copy paste this address! It's basically my server that ChatGPT talks to to get entries from the dictionary.

This is probably set to OAuth. You MUST use the dropdown menu to set this to "mixed".
What this means:

ChatGPT apps can be anonymous or they can be restricted to logged in users or a mix of the two.
|
|
In my case, it's a mix. You don't need to login just to see entries from the dictionary, but to add words to your word bank via ChatGPT or to edit your own notes ... that'll need you to connect your YourDailyGerman account.
|
So do make sure to set it to "mixed". It will not work otherwise.

Slot 9 (Warning and Wrapup):

|
OpenAI hasn't reviewed my app to check if there is malicious code in there. That's why they ask you to confirm that you add it at your own risk.
|
There is NO risk in using it just to look up words, and for the account related stuff, I have already added a multi-layer safety net. In either case, YourDailyGerman doesn't hold any of your payment information in the database, so no risk there, and my app is also not trying to access anything on your computer or operating system (some ChatGP apps do that).

Tick the confirmation box and then click "create" and that's pretty much it.
|
Step D - Starting screen
After you click "create", it'll load for a bit and then you'll see this screen.
|
I'll leave it up to you to sign in or not so I have testers for both ways. You can always say in Chat that you want to connect to yourdailygerman and it SHOULD give you a login option.

After this, you'll see a confirmation about the connection on top of the screen and then you'll probably be back in the general settings overlay.
|
Click anywhere outside it to close it.
|
How to USE YourDailyGerman dictionary in ChatGPT
The idea simple... you do what you do, chatting away or doing some German practice, and whenever you say something like "What does X mean" or "What's the meaning of X", chatGPT SHOULD automatically open a widget showing you the entry for the word from the YourDailyGerman dictionary.

It'll also show you similar search results that you can also open.
Soon, you'll be able to add a word to your favorite right there from chat, or add your own user notes to the entries and they'll then be there also on YDG.

But I have to add this feature still.
|
Anyway, if a word is NOT in my dictionary, ChatGPT SHOULD create a card view similar to mine, but filling it itself.
|
Soon, you'll have the option to modify it and save it to your vocabulary on YourDailyGerman, but again... not 100% there yet.
|

So yeah... for now, you have my reliable dictionary with my usage notes right there WITHIN chatGPT and you can ask ChatGPT questions about it or ask for examples.
|
Not a game changer, but I think it's good to have curated information accessible there instead of just relying on Chatty.

What would be cool is if you try out the tool for a bit before giving me feedback. As with anything LLM related, it does glitch out every now and then.
