And yes… epidose is a word now. It’s a mix of epic and dose :).
This time, I’ll tell you a bit about my stay in Bulgaria. I was there a few weeks ago because … but hey, just hear for yourself ;)
I’m speaking normally, so for the beginners among you it’s probably too fast.
But as usual, I have transcribed my rambling and broken it up into segments so it’s easier for you to listen to a section again.
I’ve also made a slow version with audio processing but it ended up a bit robotic. Not sure, if that’s even helpful or not :).
And of course I have also made a line by line translation, so you can really work with it. And we have a little quiz, so you can test your understanding.

Hallo Leute, und willkommen zurück zu unserem Hörverstehen-Podcast. Letztes Mal hab ich euch ein bisschen über meine Zeit in Slowenien erzählt, und wie es mir da so gefallen hat.
hi guys, and welcome back to our listening comprehension podcast. Last time, I told you a little about my time in Slovenia, and how I liked it there.
Und heute, so als kleine Art Vergleich, erzähle ich euch über meine Zeit in Bulgarien, und wie’s mir da so gefallen hat.
And today, as a sort of comparison, I’ll tell you about my time in Bulgaria and how I liked it there.
Und gleich mal als kleinen Mini-Spoiler vorneweg… hat mir viel viel viel viel besser gefallen. Vor allem das Essen und die Natur.
And just as a mini spoiler right away… I liked it much much much much better. The food and the nature above all.
Ja, warum war ich in Bulgarien… meine Freundin ist Bulgarin und wir waren vor zwei drei Wochen ungefähr zwei Wochen in Bulgarien, ihre Eltern besuchen und ihre Freunde.
So, why was I in Bulgaria… my girlfriend is Bulgarian and two or three weeks ago, we were in Bulgaria for about two weeks, visiting her parents and her friends.
Als erstes waren wir kurz in Sofia.Das ist die Hauptstadt. Und dann … tschuldigung…. sind wir mit den Eltern zusammen nach Ruse gefahren. Ruse ist eine Stadt an der Donau, und da haben wir ihre Großoma… ne, nich’ Großoma… ihre Oma besucht, und ihre Großtante.
First, we were in Sofia for a bit. And then…. sorry… together with the parents, we went to Ruse. Ruse is a city on the Danube and there, we visited her great grandma… no, not great grandma. Her grandma and her great aunt.
und dann auf dem Rückweg haben wir so’n kleinen Road-Trip gemacht, mit den Eltern, und haben uns ‘n paar kleinere Städte angeguckt, und ‘n Kloster und ‘ne Höhle, und ‘n Museum,
and on the way back, we made a little road trip with the parents, and we visited a few smaller towns, a monastery, a cave and a museum.
Und das war super interessant für mich, weil ich so’n Eindruck von dem Land… von dem „normalen“ Land, was nicht Sofia ist, bekommen habe.
And that was super interesting for me, because that way I could get an impression of the country… of the “normal” country, that is not Sofia.
Dann waren wir – ohne die Eltern – bei einem Drum and Bass Festival, ein kleines Drum and Bass Open Air Festival auf einem Berg.
Then we were – without the parents – at a Drum and Bass festival. A small Drum and Bass open air festival on a mountain.
Da gab’s ‘ne kleine Bühne und Djs. Das war neben ‘ner Hütte, aber die Leute haben gezeltet, und man musste… das war ‘ne relativ anstrengende Wanderung da hoch, aber oben war super schön.
There was a small stage and djs. It was next to a hut, but the people were sleeping in tents/camping. And you had to… it was a quite demanding hike up, but up there it was amazingly beautiful.
Man konnte ins Tal gucken und es gab Musik, und ähm, war echt ‘ne coole Erfahrung. Obwohl, obwohl die Leute ‘n bisschen… die waren ‘n bisschen langweilig. Also es wurde nicht so viel getanzt, wie ich gedacht hab. Da kenn’ ich aus Berlin mehr.
You could look down into the valley and there was music and erm it was a really cool experience. Althoug, although the people were a little… they were a little lame. So, they weren’t dancing as much as I would have though. I know more from Berlin when it comes to that.
Aber ja… die, die zweite Woche waren wir dann in Sofia, und ich hab’ Sofia so ‘n bisschen gesehen. Nich’ alles! Sofia is’ relativ groß.
But yeah… the second week, we were in Sofia, and I got to see Sofia a bit. Not all of it, Sofia is pretty big.
Aber ich hab’ verschiedene Bezirke gesehen und so ‘n Eindruck von, von der Stadt an sich bekommen.
Ja, und insgesamt hat’s mir sehr gut gefallen. Vor allem das Essen und die Natur.
But I saw different districts and so got and impression of the, of the city overall.
Yeah, and all in all, I liked it a lot. Primarily the food and the nature.
Das Essen… Das Ding mit Bulgarien ist… ähm wie, wie jedes südeuropäische Land sind die Zutaten einfach leckerer. Zumindest die Zutaten, die ich so esse.
The food… the thing about Bulgaria is… like… like with any country of southern Europe, the ingredients are simply more tasty. At least the ingredients that I like to eat.
Also die Tomaten sind viiiiiel leckerer als hier, Gurken sind viel leckerer, der Käse ist besser, die Paprika sind leckerer, und es gibt diese.. ähm … ich glaub… nich gebraten, sondern… geröste … geröstet. Geröstete Paprika, und ahhhh, die sind sooooooo lecker.
The tomatoes are waaaaay more tasty than here, cucumbers are much more tasty, the cheese is better, the peppers are tastier, and there are these… erm… I think… not fried but… roasted… roasted. Roasted peppers, and ohhhh they’re soooooo tasty.
Die bulgarische Küche ist relativ vielseitig, find’ ich, und die Karten im Restaurant sind relativ lang. Also es gibt immer relativ viel zur Auswahl – sowohl Fleisch, als auch nicht Fleisch.
The Bulgarian cuisine is relatively versatile, in my opinion, and the menus in restaurants are kind of long. So there is quite a lot to choose from – meat as well as not meat.
Und ich kann, ja, zwei Wochen bulgarisch essen und es wird mir nicht langweilig. Und das ist echt lang. Also, ich kann zum Beispiel nicht zwei Wochen vietnamesisch oder thailändisch essen. Oder … ich kann auch nicht zwei Wochen italienisch essen. Dann krieg ich irgendwann Bauchprobleme.
And I can, well, eat Bulgarian for two weeks and I won’t get bored. And that’s quite a long time. Like… I can’t for example eat Vietnamese or Thai for two weeks. Or… I also can’t eat Italian for two weeks. Then, I’d get tummy problems at some point.
Aber zwei Wochen bulgarisches Essen, überhaupt kein Problem, weil’s einfach super vielseitig ist, und für mich super lecker.
But two weeks of Bulgarian food – no problem at all. Because it’s just super versatile and for me, super tasty.
Die zweite Sache, die mir echt gut gut gut gut gefallen hat, in Bulgarien, ist: die Natur. Die Natur ist wunderschön. Die Wälder. Es gibt super alte Buchenwälder und alte Tannenwälder, und man hat die ganze Zeit das Gefühl, oder ich hab’ die ganze Zeit das Gefühl, ich bin in ‘nem europäischen Dschungel.
The second thing I really really really really liked in Bulgaria is: the nature. The nature is gorgeous. The forests.
There are old beech wood forests as well as fir forests and the whole time one has the feeling, or I have the feeling the whole time, that I am in a European jungle.
Es ist alles so grün und so saftig. Und überall wächst was. Und an den Bäumen wachsen Ranken hoch, und an den Ranken wachsen kleinere Ranken hoch, und is unglaublich schön.
Everything is so green and lush. Something is growing everywhere. And on the trees, there are growing vines and on the vines there are growing smaller vines and it is incredibly beautiful.
Es gibt echt viele Berge, und, und jeden Stil von Berg. Also Berg mit Schnee, Berg ohne Schnee, steinige Berge, flache Berge mit Gras, es is’ unglaublich… unglaublich schön.
There are lots of mountains, and, and every style of mountain. So mountains with snow, mountains without snow, rocky mountains, flat mountains with gras, it is incredible… incredibly beautiful.
Und das, das Ding mit Bulgarien ist auch, es ist ein relativ großes Land, und da wohnen nich’ so viele Menschen. Also… ähm… es gibt echt viel Platz und es ist wirklich super einfach, so ‘n bisschen aus der Zivila… buäh.. aus der Zivilisation raus zu sein.
And the thing with Bulgaria is also, it’s a relatively large country and there aren’t that many people living there. So… erm… there is a lot of space and it is super easy to be outside of civilization a little.
In Deutschland, egal wo du bist, du siehst eigentlich immer ‘n Zeichen von Zivilisation. Also irgend’n Dorf, oder irgend’n Bauernhof oder irgend’n Feld.
In Germany, no matter where you are, you’ll pretty much always see a sign of civilization. So some village or some farm or some (farm) field.
Und in Bulgarien ist das nicht so. Man fährt eine Stunde aus Sofia raus, und is einfach in der Wildnis, und das ist toll!
And in Bulgaria it’s not like that. You drive one hour out of Sofia, and you’re simply in the wilderness and that is great.
Ja… ähm… das waren meine Eindrücke von Bulgarien. Wenn ihr mal da wart, dann schreibt mal in die Kommentare, was ihr für’n Eindruck habt, und ob’s euch gefallen hat, und ob ihr wieder hinfahren würdet.

Now, that I’ve done the transcript and all, I feel like there’s a lot of stuff I forgot to tell you. About the stray cats and dogs. Or the beautiful handicraft work I saw. Or the failed constructions in the city center of Sofia. Or the amazing skies Sofia has. Or how all the glasses in all the places I was were impeccably clean (not like that in Berlin AT ALL).
Or my weird love with socialist era architecture. Or about the people in Bulgaria and the slightly pessimistic vibe. In fact, now that I am writing this, I feel like I have talked about the most boring parts.
But … I hope you get at least some impressions.
