Hello everyone,
a bit late today, but welcome back to the German learning Advent Calendar 2025, door number 10.
And behind this door is the first recommendation for a language tool for this season.
LingoDeer
Yeah… I know… LingoDeer, lingopie, langotalk, lingodies, langodas.
There are so many apps now that the names start getting confusing.
But today, I want to tell you about LingoDeer because it’s basically what Duolingo could be if they took the idea of teaching someone a language seriously.
Bit of backstory first because why not.
LingoDeer contacted me last spring, asking me if I would want to do a review and even offered me a small amount of money.
So I checked out their app and thought… okay, this is just like Duolingo. They have a linear learning path, with mixed topics and some cartoon character. So I wrote them back saying that I don’t really know what to say other than “It’s like Duolingo” and they then sent me a sort of self-review, but ultimately I rejected to do the review because I just wasn’t too convinced of the product.
Until I actually downloaded Duolingo again.
Yes, a few weeks later, I thought “Oh, let’s download Duolingo and learn some Russian.” I have been trying to learn Bulgarian for a while now and I am failing because I am lazy and unmotivated and don’t vibe with the language very much. So I thought I’d try Russian and use Duolingo to see where they’re at with their multi-billion dollar product. Surely it’s the perfect app if they have that kind of funding available.
Well… this current iteration of Duolingo is the worst of all the ones I have seen. Like… It was so much worse than what I imagined it to be. I can’t get into that now though because that would end up being just a rant about Duolingo. That’s for some other time maybe.
But yeah, I kept testing out of levels eventually skipping 90 days worth of learning because it’s just so ungodly slow.
And I hated every second of it.
So I thought… hey, why not try out LingoDeer again.
And guess what happened after a few days:
I ACTUALLY BOUGHT A PAID ACCOUNT!
How stupid am I?
They offered me a free lifetime account, plus a bit of money plus a give-away account for you and I said no, because I didn’t know what to say other than “It’s like Duolingo”. Not realizing just how far Duo has fallen by now.
I reached out to the team now but I think they’re offended by what I said back then. They’re from Korea as far as I know and I was my German direct self so yeah… no freebie today.
But that whole story makes this all the more authentic.
Lingodeer is a great App
If you’re looking for an app that offers you:
- a guided learning path
- with incremental but steady progression, not just a progression-simulator
- bite sized lessons that you can fit in easily
- lots of exercises
- audio
- progress tracking
- a nice interface and a professional team
- AND grammar explanation
… then LingoDeer might be what you’re looking for.
It basically has all the good things of Duolingo, and some of the things that people miss on Duolingo. Particularly, proper grammar explanations and actual progress.
LingoDeer is much harder than Duolingo, in that you can’t just breeze through the learning path as fast. Like… I could not test out of any levels on LingoDeer and I COULD test out of levels in Chinese on Duolingo, because it was just so easy (I don’t know ANY Chinese).
So you have to actually “work” to get a ahead and sometimes you’ll get stuck, but that’s much more like real language learning.
Now, as expected, I have fallen off the language learning train again, so I can’t really say how well LingoDeer does long term, but from what I have seen, I think it might actually be a good base method for self study, that you then supplement with other things here and there.

If you’re looking for an app that gives your learning structure, this is definitely a recommendation.
Sorry that I can’t offer a freebie for you, that’s on me and my stupidity.

If you have experience with LingoDeer, please please share them in the comments. And also, if you have another app in mind that does something similar in a similar format, please share. The fewer people that use Duolingo just due to a lack of awareness of better alternatives out there, the better.

I could then explore it more, and hands down if it isn’t one of the best apps I have ever seen in my life.
The best part is a grammar section, and I swear it is like Duolingo used to be – huge, a-little-informal, not boring explanations. Then they removed this. :(
My latest addition to the sack is Turkish, and oh my if its grammar is tricky sometimes. Lingodeer explains it so good I want to shed happy tears.
Then the system of repetition. And again – Duo used to have it (sad tears) when you could recap one module or all the modules with random sentences. Now they changed it too. :(
The system of repetition in Lindodeer is superb, that many app lack and what I really need – the translation of FULL sentences, not giving a phrase and offering to insert one missing word (which always will be the easiest word of the full phrase ><).
So this app is really really really great. Thank you and sorry for my previous angry comment.

No need to apologize for anything, it’s good to have discussion and debate and the age of the influencer, where everyone is trying to sell something all the time, it’s totally fine to question motive or method.

I owe you an apology, so here I am, humbly confirming that I was not right and you were. I do apologize for my quick judgement and harsh words.
As a curious human being (on my learning path I think I tried every major language app ever created) I could not help but trying this one out. On my first try it seemed curious, however it did not let me go on without paying after the first lesson, so I said “Meh” and marched to your comment section to defend 10-years-by-my-side-green-owl.
However, my curiosity took the better of me, and upon seeing the Christmas promo, I could not help but purchasing the 3-years subscription. ><

I started with Duolingo and 4 or 5 years ago. It taught a lot of great fundamental rules for German. Of course, if I didn’t understand something, I did extra research, which is how I found your site. But, updates to their app made me stop using it. What I liked most about Duo, was the practice translating English sentences to German. A lot of apps I’ve personally come across just have you translate German to English.
I use a myriad of tools to learn German. I use the seedlang app, which functions mostly as a vocabulary builder for me, I also use Learn German with Jenny, I listen to podcasts and do my best to read books in German (usually simplified to b1 level). They all have their pros and cons… I really neglected practicing speaking. I’m too embarrassed to have a zoom call with someone to practice talking. Haha … :/
I’d do best in a ‘real’ structured class, but that’s not possible right now. I’m always interested in new language apps. So.. thanks for the suggestion.
DL also has some grammar tips, but it’s not very detailed — and almost ‘hidden’.

If you click the heading, “SECTION 5, UNIT 169”, it will show the card of each section. For example:

You can click “See details”. That takes you to a summary page, where there’s a section called “Grammar concepts”, listing (for example):
Each of those is a collapsible section with a very short explanation and a couple of example sentences.
On the phone (Android app, no idea about the iPhone), above the lesson, you have the same heading:

Tapping Section 5 just closes the window and takes you back to the course, but tapping “60 to 79” takes you to the summary described above (the one that appears when you click “See details” in the desktop browser).
But I guess this is not the DuoLingo support channel, so I’ll shut up.
I have used Rosetta Stone (not for me), Memrise (good for listening to simple phrases, recorded in the street with passers-by, but unfortunately not too much material, and zero grammar) and also bought OuiNo (recommended here earlier), but that’s for me, either. Memrise have extended their German track (logged in just to check). They do have a recommended track, but otherwise you’re free to choose your own (they call the topics ‘scenarios’, e.g. ‘activities’, ‘education’, ‘food’…). They now have various short videos (‘how to do a handstand’, ‘challenges as a mom’, ‘bad pick up lines’ (hmm, a guest lecture from Thomas? :-)), but as I’m not a current subscriber, I don’t know those. They offer a lifetime purchase, for about 65 EUR right now (at least on my account dashboard; on their sign-up page, they list about 130). The purchase / subscription is valid for all languages.
For great daily German from the real world, good explanations and fun, engaging content, nothing beats YDG, though. I love Emanuel’s explanations, with the related words, etymology and so on. And the Eichhörnchen, Einhörner, Maria and Thomas, too (though we seem to be seeing them less, nowadays).
Oh, I’ve just tried Memrise’s ‘conversations’. It’s an AI-based tool, for example:
“Secret to longevity
Goal: You are celebrating your one hundredth birthday and you are giving an interview to a local newspaper. Share the best tips for a long and healthy life.”
You are ‘interviewed’ by a bot. You type your answer, and get feedback on grammatical mistakes etc.
The videos are short (1 minute or so), with a list of words shown (German-English, in my case) before the video. The the speed varies, the first one I watched today was like a vlog, pretty quickly spoken. The second was like a small TV newsbit, much slower.
OK, back to YDG. :-)

I really like the interface/design of Memrise but what I absolutely hate is that I cannot practice custom decks in app. I used to practice with custom decks and not having them anymore is just soooo frustrating that I’m not willing to pay.
Thanks for the great feedback. I’ll make sure to check on the most normal situationship/flatshare/couple situation with M and T more often. You do deserve an update, for sure.

As a Duolingo user for more than 10 years I’ve seen a lot of changes, and the only drawback that I can agree on is the lack of grammar explanation. There used to be a huge grammar section with so many details on every grammar topic + comments section under each example where I would learn sometimes even more. Unfortunately, Duo discontinued this, and this is what I regret the most.
Still, the App is great, and has one of the best features that no other App has (and believe me, I tried a lot – Babbel where I have a life-subscription and that is also good, Busuu, HelloTalk), and it is the mode of repeating the learned material.
Only Duo will give you the FULL sentence to translate, and this is what a person really needs to learn – not just separate words, but the full phrase to see how these words are linked together.
Other apps will only allow you to insert a missing word and the app will choose for you which words you can repeat and how often. Duo in this sense is unbeatable.
Of course it gets posted, why wouldn’t it. We’re just having a discussion here.

So I have not tried Babbel or Busuu, but LingoDeer for instance does need you to type complete sentences, and I’m pretty sure others do too. So no… it’s not only Duolingo having that feature.
Amazing strategy – singing eulogy to another App (who paid you to advertise them) by bad-mouthing the App that 1) has been out in the fields for far more time than any lingodeers could have dreamed of; 2) ALWAYS unwaveringly free no matter what, while other apps will not allow you to go farther than a couple of classes without paying; 3) has been and stays to be absolutely great, and it is not the app’s fault that people are so lazy that cannot keep up the study and give up saying that Duolingo offers nothing but a bunch of stupid phrases.
It is difficult to create a great ads by itself. Much easier to do it by pouring dirt on something that actually did a great job and keeps improving. :-/
Duolingo has like 90% market share of language learning apps. I think they can handle some bashing.
You don’t seem to have paid attention though:
– Lindodeer OFFERED to pay me last April
– I declined because I found their app too much like Duolingo
– I then later became a paying customer because of how bad I found the current Duolingo
There are PLENTY of people who have 1000 day streaks and cannot really speak any German. That’s Duo’s fault.
I don’t even think Duo in it’s current form is a badly made product.
I think it’s a product that’s not really going to teach you a language (literally ANY big app is gonna do that better than Duo). And my biggest gripe is the gap between what they could be and what they are.
If you like Duolingo, good for you.
But you have to accept that I, and quite a few other people online, tell other people that WE think (our opinion) that it’s best to not use it if you want to get anywhere.
I’ve been using Busuu for the past few months and find it much better than DL. You take a test when you sign up and they put you at a level that will challenge you. They also have grammar explanations integrated into each lesson so you don’t have to go looking for them.
I’ve been using Duolingo since 2015, but when they started moving features to the subscription side, what is left isn’t that compelling any more. I only use it a little each day to maintain my streak (10+ years).
10 Year Streak?! Wow, that is impressive. They really should give you a complementary pro subscription just for being this loyal. So does Busuu also follow the learning path “method”?
If by Learning Path you mean A1, A2, B1, etc, then yes.
I meant more like a super linear path that takes you from lesson to lesson, like Duolingo has and that doesn’t let you deviate from it sideways (vs more free choice regarding what to study and work on).
It will take you to the next lesson after the one you just finished, but you are not required to follow any set order and you can jump into any of the A, B or C learning levels. The lesson are grouped into topics, where you focus on either a grammar topic, a life-skills type theme that focuses on vocabulary or a mixture that covers gender and case along with new vocabulary.
Ah nice, that sounds like something I would enjoy. I really hate being restricted to one path.
Fluent Forever. I have been there from the beginning. The theory behind it (make your pwn visual associations for each word/phrase and your own phrases) is right up my learning brain alley but I have become disillusioned as of late. Now, the extra bits are either unhelpful or annoying. I don’t need motivation in the form of checking boxes on what my weekly goals are. For instance 1 week every day use or 2 etc with other juvenile ideas . AI generated grammar explanations require knowing what the grammar explanations vocabulary even means! I’m around B2/C1 level and used up all the stored vocabulary (or can’t find the rest). Putting my own phrases in, especially colloquial expressions, gets stodgy translations in German. And finding pictures on line is slower than it ever was.
Maybe it is true for all learning apps, this is my first one, that you have to always be live on-line. I was very dedicated in the beginning and now it feels like drudgery. I think it is great for starting – maybe the best – but cumbersome at this point. I’m a lot disappointed. (Bad English grammar alert, lol!)
Never heard of it as an app, but definitely as a “brand”. I think having an app for upper B2 or even C1 is next to impossible. The main skills there are working with and producing text, and that’s just really hard if not impossible to reduce down to bite sized lessons or automated exercises.

Write something, then put it aside for a day or two. Then read it again and see if you can spot mistakes or weird phrasings (almost sure you can). And then you can talk with ChatGPT about it and maybe have discussion, depending on the topic.
It looks like it’s better than Duolingo if you are starting from scratch. It isn’t any use if you are already level A2 or B1.
Yep, I found pretty much the same thing. In the name of science I completed everything possible in German I and German II, but that’s *pitifully* little: really, it’s about 45 minutes work in total, and then you’re shit out of luck, it seems. Certainly that’s a long way (for me) from being able to rationally decide whether it’s worth spending money on, but what I saw would suggest a solid *nope*. Perhaps if learning a different language from scratch it would make more sense.
FWIW… The accessibility really needs some work, particularly in the browser: for example, questions with “bubble” responses can’t be typed through as you can in Duolingo, so you’re left to move the mouse from element to element and click wie ein Höhlenmensch.
I also noticed a total lack of “free range” sentences: you only reconstruct existing structures, and correct incorrect instances. Maybe that kicks in later, but if not it’s a major step down from Duolingo.
And yes, there’s *so much* to hate on with Duolingo, both the app and the company, but even as a free user(#) there’s (still) a lot there that you can build with. My mantra for anyone trying to learn from DL is relatively simple: try to keep your eyes away from the screen as much as possible, and say everything aloud without reading it at the same time. Similarly, if the sentence is being spoken, try to understand it without reading. When you’re asked to construct a sentence (either freely, or via word balloons) then say out loud what you’re going to enter before typing anything, or even looking at the available vocabulary (bubbles). That simple approach ups the value considerably.
(#) Sadly free users who experiment a lot with their answers are punished by being locked out (“no more hearts” or some shit like that). If you’re running out of hearts all the time it might be worth keeping an eye out for their usual end of year sale, and make sure to accept all those offers of “DL Super, 1 week free”.
This is really great feedback, or intel. Or “alpha” as the finance types would say. I just looked at the learning tree and saw it covers stuff like conditional and passive voice (in paid) so I thought it’s a somewhat complete grammar set, at least up to a functional level.
But yeah, the free portion is very limited which is what eventually made me pay. I only tried the app though, so I didn’t know about the UX on desktop.
As for Duolingo Super… my suspicion is that unlimited hearts are the main driver of sales, so in a way, it’s just buying permission to make mistakes, which is not really “value creation” in my opinion, since making mistakes is a staple of language learning. So they’re reducing value artificially, and then you pay to get back to normal baseline value proposition. Instead of adding ACTUAL new extra value.
I just hate them basically.
Yeah, that’s DL in a nutshell, unfortunately. The whole “facilitating learning for everyone” happy-clappy nonsense isn’t so evident any more, for obvious reasons: going public has put a dent in pretty much every idealistic startup, and they’re not only no different, but are in fact a poster child for throwing their purported values under the bus.
But the point remains: there’s a lot of pretty much unique value hidden away in DL, and the fun part is trying to unlock it in a way that is valuable and achievable. See above, and iterate thereon ;-)
Totally agree with your assessment of Duolingo. However, I suspect that you are touting LingoDeer because you are plotting to convince them to substitute ein Einhorn for ein Hirsch some day!
I’ve used Duolingo for ages and have found it useful, so wondered why you disliked it. However then I thought about how I use it only for two languages I already am relatively comfortable with and just want to increase my vocabulary and refresh my grammar. For that it’s proved very useful and I’ve been able to look up fine points of grammar here or via Google.
However the times I tried it with an unfamiliar language such as Chinese or Gaelic, I found it was not sufficient to get me even started.
Duolingo though has been useful for helping me learn Chess though :D I may never be a great chess player, but Duolingo has advanced me to the level that I can actually win against another novice. I’ll move beyond Duolingo on that eventually but I’m happy for those lessons.
I highly recommend Innovative Language app. I didn’t try it for German, but their Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese are all good. I got to a conversational level because of SpanishPod101 (supplemented by other techniques). It’s a mix between podcast and online lessons. The other languages of Innovative Language app are named similar: PortuguesePod101, etc.
Interesting. They’ve been around for over a decade now, so I bet they have a crazy amount of content.
I think Innovative Language Learning varies a lot by language. My daughter has used it for Japanese for quite a while and likes it. I have a paid subscription for German and find it uneven quality. My biggest complaint is that in the main dialog lessons, the woman is a native German speaker but the man is not, and his pronunciation is really bad. He’s American and his character is American – but I don’t want to pay to hear poor German even if it’s “in character.” Also, those lessons are all at least ten years old. I get the feeling they’re not actively improving it, but I might be wrong. They have a good flashcard feature – but it’s not available on the phone app, only from their website. I like the variety of different learning options, but it does make it hard to follow a linear path. Still, they were a good place to start.
Yes, it highly depends on the language, I agree; Spanish has been the best in my experience, and I’ve been fortunate that Portuguese and Arabic were nice, too.
I noticed they now have a ‘learning path’ when I started Portuguese earlier this year – a couple of years after I last used this platform. Maybe it’s because of (un)familiarity, but I didn’t really like that. I reverted to the familiar – listening to entire levels (lower intermediate, intermediate, etc.) and progressing. I found it better because my ears get used to listening while following the storyline, and I hardly notice the slow progress I’m making.
Thanks heaps, Emanuel. I have had the Lingodeer app on my phone for ages but never got into it. I’ve been locked into Duolingo for 789 days („Level 72 out of 80“). I am thinking of what next when I reach level 80 early next year. However, I am looking for something that gets me conversational! I tell myself that it will happen with time but how do people become conversational when not living in Germany? I live in Australia. I also do DW Nicos Weg via a Zoom group here. I’m not loving any of the AI tutors. They still look fake and I can’t relate to them. Probably like blow up dolls; thought you would like that reference even though I don’t use one! Any advice would be appreciated. I also liked your word Schappsidee which I used with my friends this week. Yours Peter
So LingoDeer will definitely NOT get you conversational. I don’t think any path based app can do that, but at least it can cover the “textbook portion” of the language, which Duolingo is not willing to do.
I think the AI tutors are a nice option BUT… you have to vibe with them. If there is no chemistry, then it’s not going to work, of course.
My advice would be that you pick a novel and read it out loud to yourself in small chunks. Like half a page at a time. And really pronounce it as best you can while reading as fast as you can. Repeat tricky sentences until they flow. And then, maybe write a summary or speak a summary of what you just read. It’s hard work, but it makes a difference.

I also do DW’s Nicos Weg with a Zoom group where we speak the narrative. Practice, Practice, Practice as they say and learn something new everyday. Regards Peter
Just fyi… you can practice any example pretty much in any of the articles right there by clicking the mic icon under the play button. That opens the pronunciation tool and you can record yourself reading the sentence and compare it to my recording right there. Also works in the dictionary.
Sounds interesting and I am looking for a bit more structure. I’ll give it a try.
with my current app, what’s been helping me is having relatively simple sentences that’s focus on an aspect of the language. I see it and hear it in German first and then I’m given the sentence in English and I try and repeat the German.
I find this catches lots of adjective ending mistakes and sentence structure.
And I suppose it gets me building up my German phrasing.
Just out of curiosity, which app is that that you’re using?
Ok, this is my third attempt to answer. First was way too long and in the second I couldn’t remember what “Ling” or “Lang” app I’ve been considering for my next step. Really!
Through EasyGerman I added Seedlang. It’s their Stories that I have found helpful. They’re a bit uneven, some are way too simple. And I like their Vocab – video flash cards where I can hear the German after I’ve spoken the word.
Next might be Langua to get me talking more, even if it’s to an AI bot.
A carbon based bot (human) would be best, but that’s expensive.
I joined our local Männerchor to find German humans to talk to. And I suppose singing songs in German helps as well! Maybe you have a Männerchor in your city?
Great suggestion, though I’m not a good singer. I do play the piano and have some German songs – mostly Christmas based – that I play (and sing to when no one is around). My favorite two songs are “Leise rieselt der Schnee”” and “Alle Jahre wieder”.
I did my fundamental German at Duolingo long ago, and it was a great learning tool, before it got cute and stupid and rigid. What they did to the forums and user comments on the sentences felt like vandals torching a library. Unforgivable. Note: before I left Duo, I managed to block the cartoon people on the page, but they just kept coming, as if that was the point of doing Duolingo. That’s when I left.
“torching a library”… that’s a nice image! Yeah, so much knowledge just disappeared AND a sense of community. Just so they can have the AI as an upsell.
And the cartoons… they think they’re creative, but they get old very fast if you really do use the app daily. They could use one modest million and have a small team create progressions and stories for the cartoons, so they evolve with you while you learn. But nope. Nothing.
I use Duolingo as a practice tool. I did a special for 60 bucks a year which feels relatively cheap. Grammarwise it blows, but as a quick way to stay connected with the language it’s okay. No matter what you think of the streak thing, it does motivate.
Oh, I have nothing against the streak thing. Like you say, it really does work in making people come back and interact with the language. That’s like 4 or 5 years old though, so it’s not exactly innovation. What bothers me mainly is the disconnect between what Duo is, what they say they are, how the “market” values them and what they do with the money (nothing).
As a daily little language snack that keeps you at the level you’re at so it doesn’t deteriorate, it’s a solid tool.

I miss what Duolingo was. Especially the ability to ask the community “why” which is gone now. It’s so awful now, we finally gave up. I don’t know what their goal with the newest version is, I guess to make lots of money until they lose all their customers? Anyway, I will take a look at LingoDeer.
Yeah, whatever they’re trying to do, teaching someone a language is NOT it. Maybe they’re targeting the absolute mass market so that people who would never ever consider trying to learn a foreign language on their own actually consider it. In that sense, it’s a great and empowering thing then. So they’re kind of “ignoring” the more serious learners in favor of trying to appeal to the masses.
The problem I have with that then is that they’re not actually empowering anyone. Instead, they teach you next to nothing while giving you the feeling that you learn a lot (because you play Duo a lot) and then, after a year, you walk away thinking “language learning is too hard for me”. A good app would have you actually progress, no matter how skilled or gifted you are. But Duo shields you from learning pain, but also from real progress, in a way.

Duolingo kann gerne vorbeikommen, und ich sage ihnen persönlich, was sie alles mit ihren Milliarden machen könnten.

I used Busuu for a decent period about five years ago: indeed, I seem to have had a “pro” account that continued working for quite some time after I stopped using it regularly. (Just quietly, it still seems to be working. Now I’d better double check that credit card, just in case it’s been milking me! Hmm, no sign that I can find! I suspect they were loathe to lop anyone who contributed significantly to the forums.) In any case, here’s what I wrote about the experience a couple of years ago:
(Ugh: sorry for the terrible formatting above, but if I try to edit out those long gaps it gets even worse! The text in the “edit” window is about ten characters wide, with a new word on pretty much every line. So I’ll leave it as is for now :-/ Ah well…)
Sorry for that, I’ll have to fix that!! (It’s the same for me)
