Welcome to the third week of the Advent Calendar. Wohoo! Day number 15, Monday.
And just like last Monday, we’ll kick the week off with a little exercise. This time, with a quiz about
Prefix Versions of “lassen”
This is a classic quiz type of the Advent Calendar, and it’s famous for being “the dream crusher”.
You go in, thinking you worked hard on your German, and then you score like 30% or something and feel absolutely deflated.
I mean… is there a better way to start the week? Sure.
But do we care? No!
We are learning GERMAN after all. We thrive on hardship and pain!
And also, this year’s quiz has more learning value because I have added explanations to each of the answers.
I started doing this this year, and definitely takes longer to set up a quiz, but I think it makes a HUGE difference in how valuable the quiz is. After all, the purpose of quizzes in learning is to LEARN, not to SCORE.
So yeah… don’t go into this thinking you need to “score” and if you score low, then your German is bad in this particular aspect.
Take this as an opportunity to learn something about lassen, its prefix verbs and prefix verbs in general.

I did well on the “lassen” quiz mostly by choosing the answer that “Sounds Right.” It seems it usually is right !

I did better than expected, to be honest. And the last question was half right and after I saw the answers I realized the half I got wrong I’d practiced before. So more practice I guess.
Thanks for the great quiz. I did horribly on it, but had fun! One question: how is „taking off your shoes“ less literal than „taking a picture off the wall“?
To my eye, both are very specific in terms of a physical object and a…wait a minute. Is it because the wall is more concrete (conceptually!) than where your shoes go?
Good question. The picture is “on” the wall and you take it “off” of the wall. The core is “surface to surface”, if you will. That’s the preposition, basically.
“an” in the context of clothing is an abstraction of that. You “anziehen” (put on), “anhaben” (wear), “anlassen” (not take off) and so on. The opposite of the strict literal sense is “ab” but for clothes it’s “aus”. You anziehen and ausziehen.
But for someone looking through the lens of “on”, it can indeed seem to be the same level of abstraction (or lack thereof). Then, that’s a case of “you just have to learn it” :)

Thankfully lived up to the expectations of my former self as a chronic overachiever! But seriously, I grew up bbi-lingual decades ago but rarely have the opportunity to speak German unless I’m visiting the country – it made me happy to know that some of that Grammatik remains embedded in my psyche!
Oh, for you as a bilingual person, this stuff should feel fairly natural. The difference between the r-version (reinlassen) and the “normal” version “einlassen” for example is something kids pick up VERY early and they often use the r-version before they use the actual prefix verb.
Even if dormant, I think most of your German is still there, just waiting to be kissed awake.

Hi Emanuel. I love coincidences. The timing of this quiz using ‘lassen’ was perfect as it was introduced to me as a new word in Duolingo only yesterday. Separable and irregular with many prefixes – you did a good job of expanding the range of “lassens” available. Time for a bit more study into this not-so-innocuous verb. Cheers Peter
