Hey everyone,
here’s a picture of a rock in on the wild, beautiful island of Golta in Norway. And on the rock is me eating nachos and drinking beer … IN MID DAY!!!
OMG.
And I think you already know what that means…
I’m on vacation for a couple of weeks :).
I’m in Norway, in the city of Bergen and it’s really beautiful. One of the best cities in Europe in my opinion.
The nature is beautiful, the sea is beautiful, you can start your hike like 10 minutes from the city center, or you can explore the countless islands by boat. Just amazing.
Now, I will still check my emails and reply to comments, so no need to stop. If you have login trouble or a question about German, just ask ahead. I’ll just not check as frequently, so please indulge me if it takes me a couple of days to get back to you.
I’ll also do a little work behind the scenes on the website but yeah, mainly I’ll vacation.
If you want to see some impressions, you can check out my photography Instagram here:
I wish you a great start of August and I’ll see you soon.
Bis bald :)
Hallo Emanuel! Viel Spaß in Norwegen. Hab eine Frage: gibt es ein Artikel über Indirekte Rede? Es ist ein Thema, das ich sehr schwierig finde und ich wäre sehr dankbar, wenn es ein Artikel darüber gäbe. Danke! (Tusen Takk!)
Nein, gibt es noch nicht :/. Was findest du denn daran schwierig?
Danke dir! Und Glückwunsch zum Umzug :)

So glad to hear you’re taking a vacation. Bergen took my breath away. Have fun!
Do you mean figuratively or literally :)? Because I did the 1333 Sherpa stairs yesterday and that was quite literally breathtaking
I’ve just arrived in Bergen for my year exchange at the University! Strange coincidence. I’ve been stick in quarantine for the past few days but I can’t wait to get out and explore
It’s awesome, really. So much to explore!! You’ll love it :).
Machs gut und viel spass
Viel Spaß
Viel Spaß!

Nei :)!
Hier ist ein Urlaub Witz für dich. Ich habe einen einmal im leben Urlaub gemacht. Und ich werde das nie wieder tun.
Ich verstehe das nicht :)
“Now, I will still do check my emails and reply to comments, so no need to stop.” ….too many verbs! …..better: “Now I will still check my emails…..”
Thanks :)
Enjoy your well deserved Urlaub, kiddo!
Have a great vacation ! Instagram photos are amazing !
Danke :)
Auf wiedersehen! Wunche I dort war – Ralph
Würde das nicht als gesunde Ernährung bezeichnen…abgesehen davon, wünsche dir einen erholenden Urlaub. Du hast es verdient!
hahaha, dankeschön :)
Hallo,
Hope you have a wonderful holiday!
I’ve been to Bergen and I agree with you, it’s a fantastic city and there’s plenty to see and do. I took the train from Bergen to Oslo and found the trip awesome, as you get to see all kinds of landscapes, it’s a very slow train journey, mostly designed for tourists (about 6 hours). If you like salmon, try the dry smoked variety at the fish market – it’s the best salmon I’ve ever eaten!
By the way, lemme know if there are any restrictions in Norway – I want to go on holiday in late September or maybe October and am looking for restriction-free destinations :)
Shönen Urlaub und viel Spaß!
So Norway has been locked down for a long time but now have incredibly low number of COVID. That’s nice but it means that they flip their shit in the news when there’s like 30 transmissions in Bergen. Coming from Berlin, this is ridiculously low, but for people here, who had like no transmission for a couple of weeks it’s a pretty big deal. Bergen airport was the worst experience I ever had, corona wise. You register online before coming, then at the airport with the police and THEN they register you again by hand and THEN they rapid test you and you have to wait for the result. All this time, you wait in lines where all people wear the mask on their chin and no guard says anything. We spent 2.5 hours there after landing and it was awfully bureaucratic. If you’re fully vaccinated, it’s different though. You can waltz right through, though I don’t know how far. So yeah… they take it REALLY seriously at the airport. Also, Norway divides countries by color and you can NOT come from a country that is orange or red without going into quarantine. It’s a quarantine hotel and you have to pay 50 Euro a night. What’s important is that also layovers matter. We wanted to go through Denmark, but the North of Denmark is orange, so this was a no no. You cannot fly from a green country to London, switch planes and go to Norway. That’s gonna be quarantine for you then, unless you’re vaccinated (I think!!). Once you’re in the country, it’s pretty chill. Everything is open, no masks or test are required in cafes and bars. There is a mask sign in buses but barely anyone wears one. Not even on the chin. Like 20% of people have it on maybe. All that might change though as the numbers are rising. Because despite all the bureaucracy, the actual testing they do SUCKS. It’s what I call a booger swap. The tickle the front of your nose a little and they won’t find shit with this kind of testing. Meanwhile, after waiting in line with chin masks for 2 hours, the whole plain load could be infected. Not to mention during the flight, where also like two thirds of people had their mask off, the flight staff not even trying to enforce it (WizzAir). Anyway, with cases rising, Norway might overreact at any moment and shut things down again. They change their color coding weekly on Sunday, so you need to do some research before coming. A lot depends on whether you’re vaccinated or not, but unlike many other countries in the EU who talk a tough airport talk, Norway actually walks the walk. They do check you! Oh, rapid tests here are expensive (1000 kr a pop). So yeah… not sure, what to say. Maybe do some research but long term planning might not be the best option for Norway at this time. Hope that helps… Read more »
Thank you so much for taking all the time it took you to write such a long and detailed answer :)
Considering all you said, my best bet is probably to travel to and stay in Sweden and then see if I can take a trip across the border to Norway if thinks are chill by then…
I did get vaccinated so I don’t have to put up with all the hassle you guys went through, but I still don’t want to holiday in a place where I can’t be free and do as I please…
Thanks again and do have a nice holiday!!!
Nachos in Norway!?! Why not! Schönen Urlaub!
Weirdly enough, Mexican stuff is cheaper here in supermarkets than in Germany and better quality. Better Nachos, better Salsa, better selections :)
Ha, my first question was going to be whether the salsa has added sugar like every salsa I’ve found in Germany. (Why Germany, why are you like this)
Schönen Urlaub, auf jeden Fall!
That sounds gross. My 1/2 Mexican husband would be even more horrified
Sugar and a lot of vinegar. I think your husband would call it…. vomit!
Yes, it does have sugar here. But it’s not as big a sugar-vinegar disaster as in Germany. I really don’t understand it either. It’s sooooo far removed from good salsa! And it’s expensive in Germany. Pure garbage, really.
I just have say, I didn’t realize Germany had the same sugar and vinegar situation as we do here in the US. It’s not necessarily horrible, but it is a bit like chunky ketchup, so I have to be in the mood for ketchup basically. But personally, I’m happiest when there’s cilantro (I don’t know why more salsa doesn’t have cilantro in it). Anyway, I’ve never commented before, but while I’m at it, you might as well know how much I appreciate your work on your blog. It’s really nice to have somewhere to go to find detailed articles on how certain words are used, with a more personal and in-depth explanation than I’ll find in my German-English dictionary. But I especially enjoy reading the emails to help me practice my German. It’s easier than a lot of German things I try (and fail) to read. So it helps boost my confidence as I can usually figure out what you’re saying even when I don’t know a lot of the words. So I’m glad that I found your blog at some point (I don’t even remember how) and subscribed! Enjoy your vacation!
“chunky ketchup”… yeah, that’s a really good description.
When I was in Canada, there was SUCH good salsa there and the ingredient list was really small and mainly tomatoes. No vinegar, no sugar, no E this E that. Making good salsa is incredibly easy, but for some reason food brands think they need to “refine” it.
As for the cilantro… I, too, do love it, but I know plenty people who can’t suffer it and think it tastes like soap.
So putting it into condiment salsa would cut the customer base by half. I think that’s why they just don’t dare do it. When you think about it, most nachos will be eaten in a group setting, and there’s a high chance that there’s a person who hates cilantro. So even if you do love it, you might be the brand without just because your friend doesn’t like it.
Just my theory :)
Thanks a lot for following and for commenting and have a great summer as well!
Epic user name, by the way. Made me think of Nietzsche and Rammstein :)
Oh no! You’re probably right about the cilantro. We used to grow it and have it whenever we wanted (yum). My nephew explained to me recently how he used to love eating it at our place but that it tastes like soap and he doesn’t like it now. He said some people’s taste buds find it soapy (and he proceeded to get a little science-y as he expounded), and he can’t figure out why he thought he liked it as a kid. I can’t figure out if his taste buds changed or what happened. What an awful curse!
Thanks! I actually have a lot of German in me, and my dad said our last name is Danish-German, or German-Danish (whatever that means). “Haptonstahl.” Don’t know about the first part, but I’ve grown attached to the German word Stahl. :)
I didn’t see your response till now by the way, probably because I neglected to enter my email address before.
